3D Models for Architectural Visualization and Interior Design-Part 1 Furniture Chairs

A Sample of 3D Modeled Chairs I build for Architectural Visualization Clients.

3D Models

Part 1 Furniture-Chairs

Today I am posting about my experience in building virtual Furniture for my Architectural Visualization clients. I especially love doing furnishing and earlier in life I was a professional Cabinet Builder, and I am still an avid woodworker, so this is a great fit.

Since I have built and designed my own furniture, doing this in a computer is an extension of that skill set. I do architectural Visualizations myself, however I do a bit more assisting larger companies with that task, as custom furniture is difficult to find in stock models, and for any higher end clients they want very specific pieces as they usually have an interior designer as well hand picking them online from auction houses, so I am tasked throughout the year with various furniture building.

I usually get a tear sheet with basic dimensions and a picture or two and I go and build each piece. Sometimes I do a bit of internet research as well to get added angles, since I am constructing each piece by hand I need extra reference as much as possible.

I deliver these assets as Quad Subdivision models ready to drop into the scenes with mapping and test rendered in a ambient material to check the surfaces for flaws prior to delivery. I can send them as 3DSmax files, OBJ and FBX exports for my various clients in 3DSmax, Maya, and C4D which makes up the bulk of my clients needs.

As of the past few years Mid Century Modern Furniture had jumped in popularity, so I have been doing some historic and very amazing pieces from the mid 50's and 60's. Some are $15,000.oo pieces on line at Auction Sites. I build a virtual asset of the chair so that the prospective client can see the piece in their space first. I have an extensive collection of American Arts and Crafts furniture with custom pieces and Stickley reproductions that have populated various project I have done. I also sell a few generic stock models online of these still.

If you are doing an Architectural Visualization or walk through and need a custom piece contact me for an  estimate. From one small 1 Hour piece to an entire collection, I can assist.

                                      Cheers, THOM

Part 4 Sofas, Lounges, and Settees

Today I am posting the fourth installment for the Architectural Visualization work I do in building virtual Furnishing for my Arch-Viz clients, and today I am focused on Sofas, Lounges, and Settees.

My library is near 1000 models just for architectural visualization, and I have built dozens of Sofas, Lounges, and Settees for various clients from fully rendered scenes for Arch-Viz, and simply providing 3D assets for Architects.

Much of what you see in the above sample image shows that I have done extensive Mid Century Modern work, as well are Arts and Crafts furnishing.

If these are done for 3D Modeling delivery, I  always deliver these assets as Quad Subdivision models ready to drop into the scenes with mapping and test rendered in a ambient material to check the surfaces for flaws prior to delivery. I can send them as 3DSmax files, OBJ and FBX exports for my various clients in 3DSmax, Maya, and C4D. As sub-D models they are fast to work with until render time as that can be activated and applied at the end of production, to achieve the high resolution needed from the low rez Pre-Viz to very detailed for close ups and all Catalog work.

I also use these for walk through animations for Architectural work and stills.

If you are doing an Architectural Visualization or walk through and need a custom furniture made, please contact me for an  estimate from one small 1 Hour piece to an entire collection.

Project Review: Countrywide Store Remodel Visualization-Part II:Kiosk Designs-Round

Here is the primary final Kiosk design done in all wood for Countrywide back on 2007.

Here is the shot of the Kiosk 3D Prototype with the base storage area opened up.

An alternate with metal frames on the big posters up top.

A close up 3D render of the pamphlet storage details in the free standing Kiosk design.

I was asked to do an all metal version as well, as some stores used laminate brushed aluminum so I did this alt version too.

This was a half wood up top, with a metal base combo design version. 3D really assists in this as the alternates take little time to do.

A variation with different frames on the posters.

I rendered out this ortho view to get base dimension back to the architectural team at Countrywide to put into the plans.

Here is the polygon mesh view showing the build itself.

Project Review
Countrywide Store Remodel Visualization
Part II
Kiosk Designs: Round

Client: Countrywide Homes via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Summer 2007

In this, my second posting on the 3D Architectural Visualization I did for Countrywide back in 2004-2009, today I am covering one of the many Kiosks I helped to visualize for them, and today we are looking at the free standing round Kiosk Design.

One of the great advantages to 3D visualization is that the client can see before they build what the design will look like, and in most cases the folks who write the checks, need this service to assist in the bidding process.

I was given the architectural plans for a square Kiosk and was asked to create a few variations and this round version was build out in 3D as an Architectural visualization asset to present to the CEO of the company. Once I had it built out, then the variations were fast, as the base objects were created and lighting and textures were ready to go, so I quickly adjusted the various parts and materials to reflect the options they wanted to show. 3D really is the most cost effective visualization method if you want to see many versions, as sketching this would be a new drawing for each concept.

I did a version in all wood, wood+metal, wood+metal+glass, and a wood+glass version. I also built out the internal parts as well and linked it up to open up the storage area below to show the effectiveness of the design.

A free standing Kiosk, or Point of Sale Architectural element, and I will be posting the rest of the designs in the next few weeks.

You can view PART I here with the basic store visualization I did.

3D Models for Architectural Visualization and Interior Design Part 2 Lighting Fixtures

Here is a sample of the many 3D Lamps and Light Fixture models I have built and designed for Arch Viz work.

 3D Models
for Architectural Visualization
and Interior Design
Part 2 Lighting Fixtures

Today I am posting more about my experience in building virtual Furnishing for my Architectural Visualization clients, and today I am focused on lighting.

Lighting design is a favorite of mine as I am also a avid collector of antique lights. I have near 6-8 table lamps per room in my own home and I love accent lighting of all kinds.

Also since I work in themed entertainment the lighting fixtures themselves are the jewelry for each room and space and make or break the mood of each place. Having the professional lighting designers light spaces I have created helped me understand the role that the fixture and the amount of light they create makes or breaks a specific space.

Today this post is showcasing 3D modeling of specific lights, mostly MCM[ Mid Century Modern] again with Arts and Crafts copper lights as well. Being a entry level Coppersmith myself I have a deep love for mission lighting. As with my chair post, I usually get a tear sheet with basic dimensions and a picture or two and I go and build each piece.

I  always deliver these assets as Quad Subdivision models ready to drop into the scenes with mapping and test rendered in a ambient material to check the surfaces for flaws prior to delivery. I  send them as 3DSmax files, OBJ and FBX exports for my various clients in 3DSmax, Maya, and C4D.

If you are doing an Architectural Visualization or walk through and need a custom lighting fixture or electrical piece for a steampunk build, or if you want a custom design for 3D Printing, please contact me for an  estimate from one small 1 Hour piece to an entire collection.

3D Models for Architectural Visualization and Interior Design Part 3 Tables, Cabinets, and Cases

Here is a sampling of the Custom Tables, Cabinets, and Cases I have built in 3D virtually for my Arch-Viz Clients.[Full Size Link]

Part 3 Tables, Cabinets, and  Cases

Today I am posting the third installment for the Architectural Visualization work I do in building virtual Furnishing for my Arch-Viz clients, and today I am focused on tables, cabinets, and cases.

I was a professional cabinet builder during a hiatus from Art Center up in Tacoma Washington in the late 80's and I am an avid woodworker still, so I live to build in reality and virtually.

These jobs really are great as they stretch me as a designer. Whenever you build another designers work you get a bit inside their head. You start to grasp their sense of proportion and style. At Art Center in Viz-Com we did a similar exercise 3rd term and had to draw the persons design next to us in our style, then theirs. Really is a great way to break out of your safety zone as a designer. It broadens your reach so to speak.

Much of what you see in the above sample image shows that I have done extensive Mid Century Modern work, in which I already had a great love for. Now it's even stronger after building hundreds of classic designs from that era.

I  always deliver these assets as Quad Subdivision models ready to drop into the scenes with mapping and test rendered in a ambient material to check the surfaces for flaws prior to delivery. I can send them as 3DSmax files, OBJ and FBX exports for my various clients in 3DSmax, Maya, and C4D. As sub-D models they are fast to work with until render time as that can be activated and applied at the end of production, to achieve the high resolution needed from the low-rez Pre-Viz asset, to very detailed assets for close ups and all Catalog work.

Project Review: Architectural Visualization 3D Furniture Modeling 2017 The Olaf Chair

The end product for this 3D Service is the 3D Model itself, I do a surface render check for every one, thus ensuring that the subdivided Quad Sub-D Model is good to go when delivered. This is a typical test shot as delivered to the client.

Here is the base mesh with Subdivision removed to show the low poly base build I do. Subdivision Modeling allows for as much resolution as needed in the asset, yet provides a lighter base mesh for dial in of pre-lighting textures and animations.

This underside view shows the 3D Model build out of the legs with supports.

A close up details on the supports attachments with rattan.

3D Furniture Modeling 2017
The Olaf Chair

Client: Three Marks.
Art Direction: Michael Golden.

Project Date: February 2017

Of the various 3D services I offer, one is to model out hard surface 3D assets for various clients to have them take my 3D Model into their program for a variety of uses from animation, Design, Visualization both for still print, as well as animations, and in today's blog post I am covering Furniture 3D Modeling.

I have worked with Michael Golden for a few years on a project by project basis, assisting with sets of custom furniture for his incredible visualizations he does out in NYC. For me, to build out custom furniture for Architectural Visualizations in still format or a  walk through is one of my favorite things to build in 3D, and Mid Century Modern is one of the styles I enjoy the most.

Today I have a really fun chair I got the pleasure of building out, that of a weaved wicker high-back Olaf Chair. As a prior furniture builder and a woodworker myself, I love virtual furniture building.

Having to build great iconic furnishings done in the past by great designers always builds up your own design abilities, since whenever you are forced to build another designers concepts you are challenged as a designer yourself. It takes you out of your own comfort zone, and allows you to see thru another designers eye, and sensibilities.

This will be followed by other pieces I have built out, as I have well over 100 custom furniture pieces for the Architectural Visualization work that Michael does at Three Marks.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review: Next Level Chef Las Vegas 2022- 3D Architectural Concept Illustration

Next Level Chef Las Vegas 3D Architectural Concept Illustrations- The main 3D final render of the full build out as delivered to the client.

Next Level Chef Las Vegas 3D Architectural Concept Illustrations- The smaller test pass with the sketch as an overlay sent to the agency to approve the angle and proportions prior to the full build out. This was a 3 day job, so I lock in angles first to save time and budget.

Next Level Chef Las Vegas 3D Architectural Concept Illustrations- I also rendered the above grid at final 3K render scale and put it in the final PSD as a layer to match perspective to the city behind it and for the placement of Gordon over the building as a grid-guide layer.

Next Level Chef Las Vegas 3D Architectural Concept Illustrations- the Ambient Occlusion / Dirt render pass adds realistic ambient lighting and dirt into the cracks. Here you can clearly see the colored lighting I had on each level as it shows up best on the white primer material used.

Next Level Chef Las Vegas 3D Architectural Concept Illustrations- The Z-Depth render pass gives a 256 level mask that is used for all post effects.

Project Review:

Next Level Chef : Las Vegas

3D Architectural Concept Illustration

Client:  FOX Television via Cold Open
Creative Direction: Gardner DeFranceaux

Project Date:  September-October 2022.

Back in 2022 I was hired for the FOX Television show Next Level Chef. This idea was a proof of concept based on the set design on the show built out as a large curved building set in the dessert outside Las Vegas with Gordon Ramsay as a giant leaning on the architecture. The set is 3 levels tall with the best kitchen on top and the old warehouse kitchen in the basement lowest level. They work their way higher up as they win on the show.

I love doing freelance for the Cold Open agency, and with my love and background in Architectural and Interior Design work I get to play in that arena again with a gig like this. The set design was established so I needed to copy what was done, just with a much longer set with an added curved building rather than a squared off rectangular set as the show has.

I received set reference as well as the billboard 30-sheet sketch to follow with my build out so I jumped into the work. The lowest level was red brick, wood, and warm lighting with standard white old kitchen  appliances. Mid level was a cool blue lit, all stainless steel kitchen, with blue neon lighting. The Top was bright white tube frame lit, with fine wood, and a very modern designs, clean and simple. I built out the main components found in the reference and rearranged them to be about 3 times the width of the set to get a good long curve building for Gordon to lean on. In the sketch you can see Vegas in the background.

This is a Behind the Art post for those wanting to see the actual geometry in a build, focusing on the set design and set dressing props scattered about the sets.I have built out a good number of Bars, Kitchens, and Food Trucks so I had a good library to pick from. All modeling was Sub-D Quads so I could use the base mesh in some cases as this was a medium to long shot and those details would only be needed for a closer render.

Thanks go out to Gardner there at Cold Open for bringing me on for these project based roles. Please do take a trip over to the website at the link to see the impressive work they do over there. A great creative powerhouse.

I am currently full time doing freelance as I hunt for a full-time place to work at, so if you need a bid for a 3D Illustration or 3D Logo, or a 3D Model feel free to contact me for a quote. I am open to Hourly gig's, Work Retainers, Part-time, and of course a Full Time opportunity [ Open to relocation ] would be best. I have worked remote since 2009, so I am ready for your visualization or leadership needs.

3D Architerctural Renderings of Exteriors Modeling and/or Design by Thom Schillinger 3D Conceptual

3D Architectural Renderings of Exteriors: Modeling and/or Design by Thom Schillinger 3D Conceptual Designer[ Full Size 8K Ultra-HD Image HERE]
3D Exterior Modeling and Architectural Design Rendering

I a second posting covering Architectural Visualization today I am covering exterior design work. [PART I here on Interiors] I have always had a love for Architecture both Interior and Exterior Design, so getting to jump into this right out of College was a great area to hone these skills.

I eventually started doing Theme Park design as a Show Designer on both interior and exterior concepts, this furthered my contact with great Architects and Designers building themed entertainment venues.

During the Dot.Com boom in late 1999, I moved over to create virtual architecture for the Launch.com Launch City full design revision, this allowed me to fully use the past experience to create virtual environments to green-screen in live band performances for the DR CD ROM Magazine industry, though short lived as that industry was.

As I moved into Theatrical Entertainment doing Key Art for Movie Posters, this virtual exterior set work continues to this day to be a large part of what I do on a regular basis. I will typically recreate a set piece from a film at a very specific angle for a one sheet, and this allows the client to have a pre-masked smart 3D asset, with total control for editing after the photo shoot is done. A virtual set is never taken down, so I can re-access it and adjust for new renders in the future.

If you have a need for traditional Architectural rendering, Interior or Exterior, or themed work, please contact me for a bid.

PART I on Interiors is HERE.

3D LOGOS

3D LOGOS

As a 3D Conceptual Designer I bounce around quite a bit as evidenced in my TAG's to the right from 3D Illustration, 3D Modeling, Architectural Visualization, Virtual Photo Shoots, Automotive Phototreal rendering, Product Rendering to name a few, however 3D Logos are one of the main tasks that I do for existing clients, as well as one off jobs.

I have been doing 3D Logos since I started work in Theatrical Advertising for Key Art for Movie Posters, Home Entertainment,as well as Motion Graphics, and websites since back in 2001.

Over the past 16 years I have rendered out well over 10,000 3D Logos. I have worked on hundreds of Key Art film campaigns as well as doing 3D logos for a variety of outside clients, from very small jobs of just 2 hours, to full re-branding for a variety in Corporate Advertising clients.

Most Agency's I work with do not have an in-house 3D Artist, so I get called in to to a 3D-Assist , and develop a 3D logo that they have already designed out in 2D in-house.

For some jobs, like X-Men 2, I did 212 3D Logos for our first presentation, this was one of the larger presentations. Most jobs I do a dozen or more, then refine them down to finals.

I take on jobs small to large, so I can do a 3D logo for a client on a tight budget and deadline for as little as $150,oo dollars.

Trained in Art Centers Transportation Design program I am skilled in advanced surfacing. Though most logos are flat extrusions with some sort of light bevel to an edge, I hand build many more complex logos, all as a subdivision [Quad] model so that the end product can be used in extreme close ups for my Motion Graphics clients that buy the 3D Model as well as the 3D Renderings.

I have developed many looks in logos from 3D Glass Logos, 3D Metal Logos, to the chiseled center-bevel or Single Point Bevel  type that has be a popular staple since around 2002. I have whole alphabets already built for some of the more popular fonts used, so I can save time re-setting it out for many clients and be on budget.

If you have a need for a 3D Logo please contact me for a quote.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review: Traffic Agency- Art Table Construction Plans 2008

A 3D render showing the White Melamine build out for the art table.

A closer shot showing the virtually constructed parts[ Dado's and all in 3D]

A 3D 'toon' render of the table: Simply copy the object rotate and render a front view and you are done!

Exploded parts drawings like this take alot of time by hand, but in 3D the set up is about 15 minutes and you get another render, and that is a SMART 3D asset.

The piece was built in sections and assembled onsite[ typical] so here is a "flat-file-ish' section exploded-view in 3D.

The top is built from 3 4'x8' sheets of 3/4" thick Plywood covered in a cutting laminate in drafting green.

Another parts drawing with all the sub-builds going together for the on-site set-up team.

Project Review
The Cimarron Group Architectural Work
Traffic Agency- Art Table Construction Plans 2008

Client: The Traffic Agency via The Cimarron Group.
Art Direction: n/a
Project Date: Late Summer 2008

As a full  time employee at The Cimarron Group I often helped out with 3D visualizations of the various construction projects that the owner Bob Farina had at the company. I had worked on a restaurant and been an Imagineer so I was very familiar with these type of projects.

Also, I have professional training in space design as I worked with Steelcase out of MI, when I was going to CCS in Detriot back in 1985, so space planning was in my design blood early on.

A simple project, they gave me dimensions, and needs for the furniture piece, and as an ex-cabinet builder myself, I did a 3D visualization to create the line art parts drawing for the construction plan document.

I even created a parts list from the 3D, as I simply counted up the parts I built virtually.

To achieve the line art there are a few ways in 3D to do this, the easiest way I use is Final-Toon which is a ink and paint renderer that ships with Final Render, my go to renderer.

This is the first in a series of architectural work I do along side the higher concept design work as well, look for future posts, and enjoy.

3D Stock Model Build Review
Mission Style Arts and Craftsman Era Chair: Built for online sales 2011 PART II

Client: Myself.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: May 2011

Today I am doing PART II covering the custom built Mission chair I sell online, and today I have posted some images testing shaders and texturing of the 3D models I sell online, as well as the catalog of 3D models I built for sale by my prior employer as seen here.

I build custom 3D models for various Architectural firms to assist the in-house visualists work, so today I wanted to show the stock model I built out and sell fully textured as I do when I so a post covering my stock 3D Models for sale.

I was a professional cabinet making before I finished up at Art Center, and my continued work in 3D Visualization has keep me building furniture, only in this stage virtually for my clients. I love the work, as I love to build and virtual building has a similar satisfaction.

You can review the build itself in a separate posting here.

I will continue showcasing many of the stock 3D models I have from various companys I have prepared them for in future posts, so enjoy!

Cheers, THOM
