 2D Animation Concept Designs

Background Layouts, Storyboard Frames, Characters, Props and Vehicles

Today I am posting some Proof Sheets of work I have done in the 2D Animation space over my career. I started right out of Art Center working in 2D Animation before I really focused into 3D work with 3D Logo Design, 3D Illustrations, and 3D Animations that take up the bulk of my work.

TV 2D Animation work:
Phantom 2040: ABC: 62 Episodes,Pre-Production, Pilot and Film.
New Adventures of Flash Gordon: ABC: 26 episodes, Pre-Production
Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child. HBO 26 Episodes

I really miss the 2D side of my art, and rarely get a paying gig anymore to use that skill. I still do love to draw and miss using this skill set as much as I was able to to in the past. There are some sketches that were not in 2D Animation mixed in for Theme Park work, as well as a few Walt Disney Imagineering pieces too here as well.

Most of the Images in these sheets are posted here on my blog full sized. Here are some searches to try:

I am currently still doing freelance as I hunt for a full-time place to work at, so if you need a bid for a 3D Illustration or 3D Logo, or a 3D Model feel free to contact me for a quote. I am open to Hourly gig's, Work Retainers, Part-time, and Full Time opportunities [ Open to relocation ] would be best. I have worked remote since 2009, so I am ready to help you.

Project Review: Turbo-3D Character Placeholder Model 2011

The final render delivered for the Teaser Comp pose for Turbo.

The base Low Poly mesh I created for the Turbo Character Comp back in July 2011.

The file with Turbo-smooth[ no pun] applied at one level[ ruff].

The High Polygon final Mesh Subdivided for the Comp Teaser Poster presentations.

Here is another angle showing the higher[ sub-division poly model] I built in Development.

Project Review
Turbo 3D Character Placeholder Model 2011

Client: Dreamworks Animation via Midnight Oil Creative
Art Direction: Christine Schweiger
Project Date: July 2011.

I regularly build out 3D assets for my clients from the various films they advertise for to use in the various posters, trailers, and websites they build, and sometimes I build something that only exists in concept form, or a 2D painting, because it is early in production. Today we review a project like this for Dreamworks.

Midnight Oil contacted me to build out the main  3D Character for the newly produced Dreamworks film, Turbo, and I was off to building back in the Summer of 2011.

The main Character was designed out as a 2D Concept Art Painting, and they did not have the model yet, so I built this from a single 2D concept piece and created the above 3D Character Illustration for Turbo.

A fun job, as I get only a few 3D Character jobs per year as 3D Logos are my bread and butter, but I do love to do these fun jobs in-between too.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review Ricks Kids (R) 3D Character Design Development

Here is the main shot of the 3D Characters I designed for Ricks Kids, 2D eyes and mouths were added latter.

The final Mesh was almost no subdivision sans the hands as I was just learning the technique better back in 2001.

In this low rez shot you can see the hands and heads were Quads, along with a few pieces of clothing.

A 3/4 side shot of the two 'kids' together.

The boy 3D Character I designed out here is seen alone

The little girl 3D Character I did for Rick Lynch at BLT.

Project Review
Ricks Kids (R)
3D Character Design Development

Client: Rick Lynch + Positive Existence.
Art Director: Rick Lynch.
Project Date: Fall 2001.

Today I am posting a little project I did for Rick Lynch at BLT and Associates with his two children as inspiration for a pair of 3D animated characters called appropriately, Ricks Kids.

I had worked on The Phantom 2040, and The New Adventures of Flash Gordon at Hearst Animation so I was apt at putting together a pitch package for a show concept, adn this work was the visuals for that project.

I built out each "kid" model in 3D and experimented with various looks to them. This was before fur-n-hair shaders were built into 3DS max so the hair is designed as a single sculpt.

I originally designed a few eyes and mouths but Rick decided he wanted to sketch those assets in the finals himself, so they were left to 2D and not added from my end at all.
I have half a dozen Rick Lynch projects that I will post over the coming weeks.

-You can view the 2D characters I designed for him for a show called The Frum-Unders, here
-You can view the 911 Emergency Parachute backpack here.

Personal Project Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XXIV[24th]

I did this one at 1am last nite, it is a composite dinosaur; T-rex legs, Steg-tail, and Saberteeth.

A baby Brac', with a puppy tail

Personal Project
Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XXIV[24th]

Last week I covered a series on mini houses and playhouses here, and today I posted a few dinosaurs I've done in my sketching time.

I draw these little guys for my daughters to color in when we are somewhere without a coloring book, and I have always loved designing little animation characters like this since I was a kid, and it continues today.

Once I had kids my children illustrations increased out of necessity since I draw for them all the time too, so it naturally will come into my personal sketch time as seen in these little 4" illustrations.

Personal Project Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XXII[22nd]

A Robotic Rhino with roller balls for feet.

A Mini-Vacuum Robot with a extension cord for a ratty tail.

A knife edged arm character with no hands...

A little Frankenstein with the full top of the head inside the lower lip of the skull, and stapled in.
[ you can see the lite ghosted neck and bolts (unfinished) in there too].

An odd little design, not sure what it is.....It is graphically a character in a box shape.

Personal Project
Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XXII[22nd]

In this twenty-second installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I have posted, today I put up a set of mostly characters that I have sketched out over the last week during my free time.

I love to draw, and that is the first step in being a proficient 3D designer. If you are just going to build in 3D[ a 3D Carpenter], you need not draw much, though it would help a whole bunch, but if you consider yourself a 3D Designer, then the language we speak is the sketch, and the Sculpture.

Personal Project: Napkin Sketching PART XVI

A Fresh 2012 sketch from about 1am last night[ today!]

A little playhouse or Tiny-Home in the Coastal Redwoods, .......

A little animated character design in a Superhero Jumpsuit

Personal Project
Napkin Sketching Part XVI

In this sixteenth installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I do when I have a pen in hand, I have put up a some 2012 sketches that I have done this month.

Itry to keep sketching every day a bit so I put up a few examples of what has been in my head.

The Frankenstein Monster above came from a discussion with my six year old about make belive and reality, so I explained to her that the Monster is from a great story, so I did a quciuk little 3" X 5" doodle on a new scratch pad I picked up last night. Pencil on Bond paper.

The other two Ball Point pen doodles, were done at my PIXAR meeting a few weeks back, when I had about 10 minutes to kill until the client came in. I had recently found the Arts and Crafts sketch I did, so it was in my brain to do a variation up on a little hill in the Coastal Redwoods of California.

I also did a little animated Superhere Character in  a jumpsuit, based on someone in the room,....shhh...:o)

Sketching really is a joy to me, and I would encourage EVERY 3D artist, and designer out there, to stay on it, it helps in ways you will only see, once you do it regularly.

Pro-Bono Holiday Work

Christmas Story Visitation.

Shepherd quake...

The King.

The Miracle.

Hebrew class alphabet poster design as a single point beveled text with paint drips-[SPB].

A painted flatter version of the above poster for Hebrew classes.

Pro-Bono
Holiday Works.

I do not work for free, and I encourage every artist I know to consider SPEC for what it is, theft. Pro Bono or charity work however, is unpaid service for a non-paying charity like a church or synagogue or school. This I encourage ALL artists to get involved in.

Above I have two projects for my Jewish and Christian friends and colleagues that I have done some work for over the last few years. I illustrated the Christmas Story for a friends Sunday School class, and I did a rainbow painted Aleph[ letter A] for a colleagues Hebrew Class.

It was fun, fast, and simple projects that I did not charge for and I recommended if you do have talent to give some away Pro-Bono, but never give free work to someone who themselves are making a profit on the work, but refuse to value your contribution by paying you.

Cheers, THOM
