Project Review: Daredevil [2002]- PART IV; Additional Title Treatments- Double-D Icons.

Aluminum Daredevil DD's, overlapping and stair-stepped back on a brushed anodized metal back plate.

This Dare Devil font was taken from a comic cover and I applied the same look as the top image.

I removed the back plate, and added in a red lower volumetric light to stream across the Daredevil two metal D's.

One of the high contrast looks I did with shadow contrast set to maximum so there was little to no gradient in any of the long graphic shadows

I extruded back 100x these two D's and put a basic high contrast red on them with the camera lowered down for this DareDevil icon idea from 2002.

Brushed Aluminum DD's on a hex metal rusted back plate. High contrast still in the lighting but realistic textures were combined in this Title Treatment.

I used High contrast light and shadows with a realistic metal texture on these skinny Daredevil D's, and added some post FX with the highlight glows.

Inset squared out Double D's with a little gloss added to the material for the type so I could get that thin sharp highlight.

A design with the D's stacked vertical with a dark feel and mini lighting glints, a very second read type of approach.

Another D inset inside the other one, for this Daredevil Icon. I went dark and moody with the lighting on this one as well, so we had bright to dark options in the full presentation.

A double stack Title with a holding device with two different scaled bevels with the high contrast light and texture look.

I did a back lit glass version here with the volumetric light rays coming past, so I dropped in these honeycomb surface textured metal ones to see the look it would produce with the red lighting reflecting in the cool steel.

Another up angle on two interlocking D's with a post glow added while sitting on a textured back plate to emulate a red flat'ish carbon fiber material.

PART IV
Additional Title Treatment Double-D Icons.

Client: 20th Century FOX via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Josiah Ludovico

Project Date: Summer 2002.

I see that a new Daredevil TV series is coming out in 2015, so I dug up a few more pieces from over a decade ago from when I worked on this advertising campaign for the film Daredevil in 2002, and I have added more 'DD' icons in this, my fourth posting for the film.

The Interlocked D's are an Icon long used in Dare Devil, so I created more than thirty variations based on vector files provided to me by the GFX team.

I did some photographic looks with realistic textures, but I did a full series of looks that were very high contrast to have a propaganda poster feel to the 3D with blocked shadows and bold shapes as well.

This was a typical exercise when I was an in house 3D Designer, in that I was given a day or two to explore a title in 3D to show the client all options. A fun experience and a great subject matter.

Project Review: Key Art 3D Illustration for WAR of the WORLDS PART IV- Teaser 3D-Card Concepts.

My first pass design utilized some chrome sphere in the text design with a dark edge lit dark face look that would be animated with the glints around the typeface.

A brighter version on the gloss black floor with some reflection blurring on my first MGFX card design.

A multi-stacked version of the edge lit logo with some radial blur added as volumetric lighting.

The alternate version looses the chrome speres and adjusts the font a bit. I emulated the 2nd look above with a brighter font on a gloss reflective surface.

An edge-lit version with some 'Matrix Green' added into the look.

This version was created based on type provided to me by Chad Robertson. I built out alien Hieroglyphics and put them inside the glass text.

A close up Low angle really shows off the Hieroglyphics inside the glass.

For the final version I overlaid the lighting effects directly off the layered file from Chad.

Here is the version I did for Calvin Sumler a double stack with brushed aluminum out front, and a gold holding device around the edges.

Some motion blur as the cards would slam is emulated with the radial blur in these style frames. Here is the second internal Card I built out.

The Date Card in the same look.

The final Title Treatment card for the Teaser we presented.

PART IV- Teaser 3D-Card Concepts.

Client: Paramount Pictures via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Calvin Sumler, and Chad Robertson.
Project Date Fall 2004

Today I am posting PART IV, covering the 3D Design work I did for the Theatrical advertising pitches back in 2004 for the Spielberg remake of War of the Worlds, and today I am covering some style frames for the internal MGFX[ Motion Graphics] 3D type Cards for the first trailer.

I did these over a Thanksgiving weekend, as I was the only one in the building and this was done my first month that I worked there.

I Did some design work myself on this one,  as well as getting Illustrator type laid out from both Calvin and Chad, Art Directors from in the Print Division to build out as well.

I did a total of about 100 logos during the process before we finished. The one sheet contains the 'BIG LOGO" and the 3D iron look for the world ,and these are my 3D contributions that went to the final, or finish for the Movie Poster. I did not finish for any AV work.

Project Review: 3D TItle treatments for George Lopez: It's not me it's you-2012

On this the first pass at a 3D Logo for George Lopez, I used a font I have used for Comedy properties before, a big fat inflated soft look for the main Title treatment, with the tag line done in brushed gold below the bright red. I added green to the radial blur out back to feel like a light effect like caustics.

A more elegant and simple approach here with gold brushed letter fonts in 3D with a slight reflective dark floor below with a bit of a blurred reflection on it as well.

The green and red here were put into neon tube outlines on the title for this 3D logo pass.

Looking up with a dramatic angle on this Golden logo with a holding edge out back over brushed metal. You will notice I 'wedged' the extrusion to a point on this one as well.

A stacked Logo with big-n-little set up with a small font tagline.

Another 3D Design this time I extruded in at a curved down, and added some fish eye to the lens via the renderer I use Final Render.

It's not me it's you-2012

Client:Undisclosed.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: May 2012.

Back in 2012 I was asked to do a half-day set of renders for a HBO comedy special for George Lopez, who had a new special, It's not me It's you, and I was asked to create as much as I could in just 4 hours. This was a test job of a half day, something I have done before to ease into working with 3D for new clients.

I was given basic direction and was only asked to make the 3D logos big and metal textures, with hints of the Mexican flag colors with Green and Red in the designs. I went to work and created this set of logos.

A quick half day of work, that sadly never went anywhere, and I did not receive compensation for. One of just two jobs in a 24 year career that I got stiffed on. It happens, just do your best to minimize it. Fun work though none the less.

Project Review: Key Art 3D Illustration for WAR of the WORLDS PART III- Blood-Moss Logos.

An early version of the Blood-Moss 3D War of the Worlds Logo had cross-scratches used to create the displacement as well as the sub-surface glow on the lowers.

For this version I added a very hot top-light and added some glo-FX to the top to add a level of heat to the look of the final type treatment.

This version has some rotational blur added as this was a style frame for a AV pitch as well, and we discussed that the logo was buzzing and vibrating a bit so we wanted a  look at that effect.

We called this version the 'Meat look', as it felt like raw steak a bit to the team.

We dialed in this look with a wrapped feel to the vines, so I created a custom map that was used for displacement, bump, illumination and specular. This was the first render.

For the second pass on this final look for War of the Worlds, I did the materiel in a red glass with internal caustics inside the font.

Here I removed the 3D displacement and went smooth with the self illumination still active on the map.

The final version I tapered the font top and bottom to a sharp point[ FFD]. This was the final look delivered in this style.

The base quad model I built with displacement ON.

With one level of Turbo-smooth[ Sub-D] added to smooth it out for the final renders.

A close up detail showing the wrapping the displacement gave to the geometry.

This is a shot of the custom Displacement map I made for the final blood Moss 3D logo.

PART III- Blood-Moss Logos.

Client: Paramount Pictures via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Calvin Sumler.
Project Date Fall 2004

Today I am posting PART III, covering the 3D Design work I did for the Theatrical advertising pitches back in 2004 for the Spielberg remake of War of the Worlds, and today I am covering a pass I did on a blood moss 3D logo.

The blood moss seen in the film was a direction that we were asked to explore, and I was provided a great hand built font from Art Director Calvin Sumler to address this and I created a series of looks that would still be legible, but would have an alien feel to them.

I had done the standard big block San-Serif Font choices for various versions up front[ that is what finished], but they gave us room to explore early on in 3D so off I went with these displaced bloody font looks.

I did about 100 logos during the process before we finished. The one sheet contains the 'BIG LOGO" and the 3D iron look for the world ,and these are my 3D contributions that went to the final, or finish for the Movie Poster.

Project Review: CNN Election Debate 2012 Key Art

The delivered final shot for view "A" of the White House built from all 3D extruded type for the 2012 Election coverage on CNN.

I was asked to create a Channel to isolate the 3D extruded type for post adjustments so I also provided a Color-picker layer.

Here is the wireframe shot showing the build itself.

The second shot was a bit lower of an angle on the same asset, that showcased the deepness of the top edge of the structure and various levels of type.

Here is the wireframe Ambient overlay image of shot "B" above.

The final angle was very low, so low in fact we see under the structure a bit as the camera is subterranean. The blur and post effect hid this.

The wireframe Poly render of this ultra Low angle shot of the 3D Type extrusion for this CNN Key Art.

In this pulled back Poly render you can see I detailed out just one side, since we were not going to see the other one. Build just what you see to save time and budget.

A close up view of the upper roof edge and banister.

A close up shot on the center top type area that was not showcased, though laid out just in case.

CNN Election Debate 2012
Key Art

Client: CNN via Cold Open.
Art Direction: Design Team.
Project Date: June 2012.

I regularly do 3D illustration work for the Theatrical Agency out in Venice, CA. Cold Open, and they contacted me to create some Key Art graphics for a CNN Debate campaign back in the Summer of 2012, so today I cover this work with a bit of behind the Art.

I had previously done an all 3D extruded type concept for the film, The Art of Rap prior to this, so that was the starting point.

For this concept I was tasked to build the facade of the White House out of various sized type lines to create the building as if the blocks themselves were the extruded type forms.

The look was a white on white, and that has been popular for a while now. I added some depth of field and delivered the shots.

A fun short, less than a day project to work on.
