Project Review: Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue Shanghai China 3D Designer-Modeler 2011 PART II

A Color Pass test on the Round one Colossus Bot [ Robot ]

Round two Colossus Robot. This was to be on the far backround on the matte painted wall for the Themed Attraction.

The Crane Bot was excavating the the foreground and would be place up front to the guests.

I loved the Roller Bots. The torso on wheels so-to-speak.

One of my own designs with 'shrimp like' feet that would move very slowly[ comic relief]

Crawler Robot from the underside has a bode section based on a spider.

Crawler bot in a smoothed Subdivided render to show the full surface.

The above Crawler Zorg Bot in low poly base mesh[ quads ]. I mirrored the bot to show two views per render for each design presentation.

The Round Two Stealth version of the Crawler bot. This one made it into the attraction.

The Scavenger Bot for Round One that follows the Zorg Bot from the film[ modified torso]

A much earlier version of the Scavenger bot incorporated a target that could fly off the robot.

The final Scavenger Robot with the Stealth look developed by Scot Drake.

A back view of the Bot with the built in Jet-Pack.

Back to my favorite Robot, the Roller Bot is stealth design now. This made it into the Theme Park Attraction in China as well.

PART II

Client: Walt Disney Imagineering.
Creative Director: Scot Drake.
Art Director: Christopher Lee.
Project Date: October 2011-May 2011

Today I am posting my second part for the 3D Visual Development work I did at Walt Disney Imagineering back in 2011 for the Shanghai China theme park attraction, "Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue", based upon the Pixar Toy Story property.[ PART One]

I was brought to assist the Design Team in 3D development of the 3D Robots and 3D Characters for the attraction that they were developing a look. Scot Drake was the Creative Director, with the Chief Show Designer Christopher Lee.

Today is PART II I have posted many additional robots I created for the Planet Zorg. Some are the first round to match the look of the Bots in the first Toy Story film, and some are the 'Stealth' second round with an updated sharp edge look to bring the designs into a modern context.

To see the attraction as well as Christoper's Lees great work go check out his development at his site here.

I will post continue in the future and post additional PART's.

Personal Project Review: 3D Robotic Crab Character Development 2014

Here is my final Image produced for my little Robotic Crab 3D Character I designed this Past Holiday.

A Screen Capture from 3DSmax 2013 shows the subdivided scene set-up[ about 2 Hrs to complete with renders]

This is my little one minute sketch I did to start this all off.

The base model is a full Subdivision model, and here is the main camera view in that Low Resolution form.

The above shot of my 3D Crab Robot  subdivided and smoothed for final use.

This side view shows the tripod like stance with the tail out back that is actually the propeller.

The same shot of my 3D Character subdivided as the final 3D asset.

An alternate shot similar to the final with the camera raised up slightly off the Kelp Bed.

The Subdivided shot of the 3D Robot Character Design I developed out.

Same view from above the 3D Crab.
I did the propeller shaft as a twisted cable you can see that in this shot a bit.

Personal Project Review
3D Robotic Crab Character Development 2014

Client: Myself: Personal Work.
Art Direction: Myself.
Project Date: Winter Break 2013-14.

Welcome Back! This is my first post for 2014, and my fifith year as a full-time freelancer.
During this past winter break I did a little personal project and designed out a 3D Robotic character of a small underwater Crab.

I worked on a very large robot project a few years ago, and I was inspired to do my own take on an underwater 3D Character. As a 3D Designer I did a micro sketch that took about a minute to get the basic feel of what was in my head, and blocked out the basic proportions, and then I go directly into 3D to design.

I built this little character out in the Tee-Pose so it is ready to animate in 3D, with some basic linking for posing, but what you see above is it posed.

A few design features I put into the little guy is that first and foremost, he is sphere based, not a surprise as I am infatuated with this basic shape as seen in my Bubble Car concept.

I love submarines as well, so underwater creatures are fun and so I added the propeller out back insipired by a early design I did at Cyan Worlds back in 2000 here.

I made the question-mark leg with a fully rotating little dualie wheel set to scoot along the ocean kelp beds.

Though I sketched two eye-pods, I went with a Cyclops instead that retracts back into the head via the iris up top as with a reuse of the the teeth on the circular mouth out front on the design.

Also, one arm was made much bigger as found in nature on various crabs, to change it up a bit I modified it in 3D.

About a 4 Hr build, with 2 Hrs to set up and render it out in the scene. A fun little personal 3D Design project for me to pass some time this Holiday season.

Project Review: Phantom 2040 Part V

Show 108: Legion X-3 A large sized BIOT.

Standard Male Biot used in all shows.

A Horse BIOT used in a few latter episodes.

A Wallaby BIOT used in show 109.

Phantom 2040: Part V
THE BIOTS

Client: Hearst Animation
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Spring 1993

In my fifth post for Phantom 2o40, the Television 2D Animated show I Art Directed, we see the robots from Phantom called "B.I.O.T.S.". Basically a biological robot. In designing these robots I followed a theme I incorporated in the show of Art Nouveau so the Biots have a wrapping and interlocking vine like nature to the shapes used in their design.

We had "modern" 2040 styled ones and blocky 2010 styled ones as well. I created about 20 total unique robots for this 2D television animated show, simplified down to be reproducible overseas for production. Even a horse and Wallaby for a few shows as well.

Project Review

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
PART I

Client: Paramount Pictures via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Rick Lynch, Dustin Stanton, Jeff Barnett, Alon Amir, Zack Ris. Project Date: Summer 2002

We tackled this project very early on when only the demo CGI sample film was finished, and they had just wrapped the live action blue/green screen work. So consequentially there was no footage or assets to use to advertise the film yet.

That is where I come in, I built all the various Iconic pieces we would need for any one sheet concept. Starting with Logo's and type, I moved to the "Captains" P-40 modified to go under water. I built all the main robots as well as some iconic architecture for some generic city shots.

It should be noted that a good portion of the designs were not final when I took on the work at BLT,and I worked from mostly sketches and was forced to interpret some elements in the robots and the P-40's design that were not completed.

Cheers, THOM
