3D Prop Illustration: Props built for 3D Illustrations, Book Covers, and Theatrical Key Art and Advertisement.

Sample Sheet of 3D illustrations of Props

3D Prop Illustration
Props built for 3D Illustrations, Book Covers, and Theatrical Key Art and Advertisement.

Props and objects, or Products are the third area of design in 3D that I do a lot of work for. 3D Logos, and 3D Architectural spaces both interior and exterior are the other two areas I have covered before on my blog. Architectural spaces are filled with props and furniture , and beginning my career in Set Design, I worked next to Set Dressers and Prop Masters and really learned to see the vital importance of this craft in adding to an overall scene. Today's post covers a smaller sample of the range of props I have been called to build out over the years for a variety of clients.

As a 3D Designer I am fully trained first in 2D design, and then trained in 3D after that. Good 2D principals of Design Proportions , Value Contrast , Staging , Lighting , and Eye Travel all will affect a design in 3D space . However, once the third dimension is added everything changes and gets exponentially more complicated. Tangents for example,  that do not appear in 2D will become a challenge in 3D since we can move around a design now and these will naturally come up, so spacial solutions are required to properly design something in 3D from the start.

My prop design work began prior to utilizing 3D CGI for my clients back as a  traditional sketch artist from the start of my career. I had to design props for the commercials I worked on, as well as in Television Animation. I designed hundreds of props for The Phantom 2040 on ABC, all themed out for future time periods , as well as retro time periods for the series as Art Director. I also did a few seasons as Chief Prop Designer on HBO's Happily Ever After Series, so I have been designing out "smalls" for a while, and naturally do the same in 3D.

I have built 3D Props from just a photo or sketch  , or remake a 3D version of an  existing props like I did for Dreamcatcher. I especially love building custom one off props from films, as well as designing out props from scratch with no existing design. This is where Industrial Design training kicks in. Also a a longtime Thematic Designer, I am trained to extract the solution based on prop use,  features, and how close we will get to the 3D Prop, and it must fit the theme of the design it lives in.

I have well over 150 images in the sample above, you will see a good range of what I have been called to illustrate in 3D.

If  you have a need for a 3D Product or Prop, as a 3D Illustration or a 3D Model or a 3D Logo or 3D Architectural Rendering, contact me for a quote today. I am open to small gig's as well as retainers of Full-Time work. Prices are very reasonable!

I do sell pre-built 3D Models online here.
I built 3D Models while 3D Design Director at The Cimarron Group , and they are still for sale here.

3D Stock Model Build Review Vintage Carbon Ring Art Deco Microphone 2005

Here is an overall virtual shot of the 3D Model I built back in 05' of this Vintage Antique Art Deco Microphone prop.

A Close up on the back of the Carbon Ringed mic with the electrical connections and screw heads to access the internal workings.

A front shot with the vintage RCA logo build out with gold and aged brass materials.

A low worms eye shot looking up at the Carbon Hoop suspending the mic by the eight springs on the outer ring.

I built out the brass screen to shield the mic element inside the tin stamped case.

An exploded view showing all the various parts used in this build.

A Wire frame shot shows that this was not a Quad subdivision build but a solid model converted. Still for sale here.

A good amount of molded parts were build using the Nurbs modeler and converted for export and sales.

A nice back close up showing the wires with insulation and heat melted ends strung thru the hollow brass base connection.

3D Stock Model Build Review
Vintage Carbon Ring Art Deco Microphone 2005

Client: The Cimarron Group for Stock 3D Model Sales.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: December 2005.

In 2005 I was 3D Design Director at The Cimarron Group, and I regularly did both 3D Illustration, as well as 3D Animation for the print and AV division, in which I built out highly detailed 3D Models, and today I am reviewing another one of the models that I built specifically for sale online as a Stock 3D Model, a Vintage Microphone.

Antique props are always a great subject matter to build as it takes me back to the era that it was created in and use the limitations of the technology used. It also helps out when I need to reuse that knowledge for Steampunk or other styles on various projects.

I build my models with a high level of detail on the parts so that the end user of the stock model can use them for close up shots and this Microphone was no different. This model was also build suing N-powers Power-NURBS software and exported out as geometry.

The model is still for sale online at the largest 3D stock company TurboSquid and can be purchased here.

I will continue showcasing many of the stock 3D models I have from various companys I have prepared them for in future posts, so enjoy!

PART III  The Wellroom Spa Observation Platform

Client: Dr. Michael Mark.
Art/Creative Direction: Myself.
Project Date: January 2009.

Today in PART III of my posts on the Mindroom centers I am returning back to a second area connected with my first post here, that of the observation platforms above the Wellness Spa Rooms.

This area is where the various Doctors and staff would check the progress of each patient from an elevated platform outside the private spa rooms. These areas contained the latest technology for a clean design as well as state of the are computing technology to assist in the healing and strengthening processes. THese were elevated to keep other clients from having easy access to the observation areas when entering the various rooms, and keeping a clean architectural space to experience.

You will see MS-Surface PC's in each observation area, along with a full heads up display that would allow the doctors to constantly observe the patient and the information simultaneously. Also for privacy concerns, the glass portals were all multilayer using LED frosting to allow each person to have full privacey at their own control from inside the spa an a layer behind the heads up so the technical information would be accessible.

In the coming weeks I will posting additional areas and the various parts in great detail so visit again!

Project Review: The Mindroom - Elite Sports Technology 2009. PART I-Wellroom Spa

Here is the 'Hero' shot for the Mindroom Spa Client Private Session Room.

I did a nite shot as well at magic hour with the sunset out over the ocean as these facilities would be located in exotic locations worldwide.

A shot from over near the wellness table and VR dome looking back to the entrance. You can see the Doctors bay up top with the touch screen glass.

A side view in the patient room with the spa area to fully relax as you prepare to heal he mind.

A big configuration with multiple client private rooms as a cut away of a floor that would be typical for this Medical technology.

PART I  The Wellroom Spa

Client: Dr. Michael Mark.
Art/Creative Direction: Myself.
Project Date: January 2009.

Back in 2009, I was able to work on a very exciting project that was a combination of Architectural Design, Product Design, and Graphics for a State of the Art Medical Development for a technology called, The Mindroom for Dr. Michael Mark out of his Beverly Hills California clinic.

The technology was an existing procedure that was to get a serious facelift, as it was beginning to grow in both interest and use. This tech in a nutshell helped train the brain of athletes as well as other disciplines to control emotional responses in order to increase abilities, both physically and mentally and to facilitate growth and healing in both. It was used over in Europe by World Cup players with fantastic results, so my job was to help visually brand the product for a larger worldwide audience.

Today in PART I of many posts, I cover the basic Higher end spa design I created for the presentations. The Main table was an industrial Medical table that reconfigured into a chair or bed so the patient could be placed comfortably in a position to view the 180 degree panoramic VR[ Virtual Reality screen that would be lowered around the head to fully engulf them in the experience.

In the coming weeks I will be showcasing all the various parts I designed including the Neurological Helmet with jelly sensors seen on the stand, the table itself, the rooms, and the various areas and use scenarios for the technology beyond sports.

Here is a semi exploded view of the 3D file.

Project Review
Medical Product Dispenser
3D Modeling 2010.

Art Direction: Myself.
Project Date: April 2010.

Three years ago, I did a one day 3D modeling job for a former colleage from BLT to recreate a virtual version of a new medical dispenser.

I regularly build out objects from scratch to assist other 3D and Motion Graphics teams with getting the asset they need at a high level of detail, and with my advanced surfacing training from Art Center, Industrial Designers like myself are perfectly suited to build these type of objects out.

As usual, I was not given the actual object itself, but just a few photos, and I built it out from there.

I created a very detailed 3D model for this Medical Dispenser that was to have multiple uses. I often am given a quick Product Design modeling project like this, and for this job, I built out this dispenser with partlines and all details modeling into the 3D file that were needed for the project.

I did a few renders of the object that I was directed to create for Alan.

Sure-Grip International PART IV Rock Skates Truck Redesign 2011

The Multi-View shot of the final re-design I did for Sure-Grip International back in 2011 for the Rock Skates truck.

Orthographic views of the truck design.

The subdivided 3D Printer build is what I exported out for the prototyping. I also added the molded axles for prototyping as seen in the DA45 here.

The base 3D model is a low poly build.

A view from underneath the truck in high Polygon form[ STL]

The low poly base model I made to create the high rez final.

The cushion cup profile emulated the DA45 as seen here.

The Low Poly view of the above Rock Truck design.

Here is the final Product first casting shots of the new Rock Truck.

Sure-Grip International
PART IV
Rock Skates Truck Redesign 2011

Client: Sure Grip International.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date:  September-December 2011.

This is my fourth post covering work I have done for Sure Grip International[ SGI], the largest and oldest skate manufacturer in the USA.

I did some 3D-Logo work posted here, and here, I also designed the look of the new DA45 Plate The Avenger, as a sharp edged stealth look for them and that design post can be seen here.

Today I have posted  a simple redesign of the Rock Truck they sell on a very popular entry level skate. The truck was granfathered over when SGI bought the skate from Rock Skates so they wanted to rebrand the truck with the current SGI logo, as well as adding some of the design forms found in the flatter surfaced DA45 their flagship truck at the moment.

We had already used 3D Printing to help visualize the other projects so I created this design in the same manner with a metal prototype being made from this model output as a STL [ stereolithograhy ] file for 3D printers.

I am an avid Quad Skater myself, so designing skate items for SGI was a dream job.

MINORITY REPORT 2002 PART II The Eye Clamp

The main symmetrical front or top down shot on the eye clamp I designed for the posters for Minority Report with a reflection of Tom's eye in there.

A 3/4 shot on the eye-clamp from the work I did for pitching the Minority Report advertising.

 A slightly tilted forward view.

And one more 3D render that is now rotated to not be symmetrical with a bit of DOF[ depth-of-Field].

A multi view showing the basic design.

A shot of the base mesh[ built all high-poly] not sub-d as I now would tackle this project as.

MINORITY REPORT 2002
PART II
The Eye Clamp

Client: Paramount Pictures via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Rick Lynch, Alon Amir, Ronnie Blumenberg, Jeff Barnett.
Project Date: Summer 2001

I was freelancing for BLT prior to coming in-house there for three years, to build up a 3D Department, and Minority report was a very early project that I had done the badge for here, and they had me move onto a tech medical device that was to be used in the film to remove the eyes of the main character to swap them out to untracable ones.

As with many projects they did not have reference images to send to me of the device, only a shot of something pulling on the eye itself, so I designed out this Medical device for a series of movie poster ideas.

If you look closely, you will see that I used a few parts off the badge directly, including the center and the little 'grills' , as well as following the three pointed concept design established for the badge I mirrored it here in this prop I designed.

You can review PART I on the badge here.

Project Review:The Para-Pak (R) Parachute-Backpack Emergency 911 Concept Design-2001

The PARA-PAK[ Pack] is an Emergency Parachute and Survival Kit that was developed after the World Trade Center Attacks in 2001 by myself For Rick Lynch.

This second render from the back describes the various assets that the Para-Pak(R) has.

Here is a Polygon view showing the basic model I designed in 3D for this project.

A 3/4 Side angle on the pack Polygon base design.

The Para-Pak (R)
Parachute-Backpack
Emergency 911 Concept Design 2001

Client: Rick Lynch + Positive Existence.
Art Director: Rick Lynch.
Project Date: Fall 2001.

When I was full time at BLT and Associates in 01',  the workload was usually very full, but I always had a side project going on with the many ideas that were fed to me by Rick Lynch.

Rick is an Idea Machine, and he always had something brewing upstairs to be visualized, concepted and designed, so today I am showing a project I did for him back in September of 2001. It was right after the 911 attack happened, and he had an idea for a backpack that would double as a mini emergency chute, so I went to work on a design for him.

When I was younger, I was a Boy Scout, and I had put together survival bags so I had an idea of what I felt would be needed here for this design, and still be able to fit in the pack along with the mini parachute.

I added in a charging system so when you arrived at work you would 'Plug-In" the Para-Pack(R) and it would charge the emergency lighting, radio, and location GPS beacon inside, so it would always be ready.

I also made the full harness a part of the pack so if the person was unconsious, it could be used to pick him up alot easier in an emergency since it is a basic handle to grab or tie a rope or cable to for rescuers.
I have half a dozen Rick Lynch projects that I will post over the coming weeks, but you can review my last post with the Animated Series I visually developed for him, called The Frum-Unders, here.

Production Design: Raveonettes' Music Video: Heart of Stone Heart Mountain Design Development PART V

The first pass quick freehand blocking on 8.5 x 11 bond for the Raveonettes Heart of Stone Video.

Here is the overlay second pass using a few templates to clean it up along with added freehand as well.

Here are the above two underlays still taped together as I put both under velum to finish up.

Here are all three layers still together before I pull them apart to isolate the final on top.

The final delivered Image[ re-posted] with just the final layer.

Heart Mountain Design Development
PART V

Client: Blind.
Art Director: Chris Do.
Project Date: January 2010

Today I have posted my fifth part, in a series on the Production Design work I did for the Music Video Heart of Stone, by the Raveonettes, and for todays posting I am showing the 'behind the process', in the creation of the 3rd Acts Heart Mountain set-piece.

I had bout 4 hrs for each design and so for this one I did two very fast doodles as seen above. The first was all freehand getting base proportions in, while the second layer I used a few templates to tighten it up.

I also have the two still taped together as it is when I sketched over it on velum. I sometime use a small lightbox for details, but for the most part the velum is transluscent enough to see what I am doing.

I also re-posted the final I delivered to the team at Blind to build out for the Music Video.
