Project Review: The Princess Bride-Key Art 3D Logo Main Title Build: Blue-Ray Packaging-2014.

The Final Dark Gold 3D Logo Render used for the newest packaging for The Princess Bride on Blue-Ray Disc 2014.

I also did one 3D Title Treatment, a bit brighter in the development stage.

Also went a cool Silver in a dim, and darkly lit environment as well.

And a 3D Logo done in a brighter silver as well was done for The Princess Bide.

My last and final delivery of a look, was a Brass one, and this one had a bit less shine than the Gold and Silver versions had in the reflection levels.

Here is a Camera view in the final Poly-Sub-D[ Subdivision Surfacing] of the file.

At an angle up close you can see the sculpted serifs.

The base Polygon build out with no subdivision added yet.

Again the close up on this Single Point Beveled font shows the base build out.

An overview of how I typically set up my 3D Title renders.

A view of the final Key Art for the Princess Bride on Blue Ray.

The Princess Bride-Key Art 3D Logo Main Title Build
Blue-Ray Packaging-2014.

Client: 20th Century FOX Home Entertainment via We are BOND.
Direction: Patrick Dillion[ owner @ Wearebond ].
Project Date: October 13th, 2014.

In Theatrical Print, there is always bleed over into Home Entertainment, to translate titles and Key Art into packaging for the DVD and Blue Ray Disc release, and today I cam covering a 3D Title I did last Fall for the anniversary edition of The Princess Bride.

I regularly do work for We are BOND, and have finished a few Theatrical 3D Logos for them[ X-Men 5:2014, The Legend of Hercules:2014, etc], so they asked me to create a 3D title in various metals for the new packages being created for the re-release on Blue-ray Disc last Christmas.

A fast one day job, rendering out titles in 3D for finish at 3K rez, while getting to hone in my material creation for the various finishes. I hand built the font as a Single Point Bevel explained in this first post, and step by step laid out here.

This is my second time I have worked on this property, as I also worked on the DVD menus a decade back as seen here at my prior employer, The Cimarron Group.

Project Review: Pitch Black/Riddick DVD Key Art 2004.

The final shot delivered for packaging for the DVD for Riddick from back in 2004'.

A front view shot they wanted for the DVD menu comps is rendered here. I provided two alphas so they could cut out the back strap easily to put over a face as needed.

A side shot rendered with two alpha channels too, the advantage to a 3D illustration vs. a photo, they are Smart-3D masked and ready to go!

A 3/4 angles shot up front with some similar highlits on the lens.

The High Poly shot here is what level of detail was used for the finish render.

Here is a low poly base mesh shot showing the simple design build for the rubber molded frame.

Pitch Black / Riddick
DVD Key Art 2004.

Client: via Universal Home Entertainment The Cimarron Group.
Art Direction: George Anderson.
Project Date Summer 2004.

Back in the Summer of 04' I was still running a small in-house 3D Design Department at The Cimarron Group, a Theatrical Adverting Agency in Hollywood, and for the Home Entertainment Division, I was asked to reproduce the prop from the film Riddick for the cover shots for the Key Art on the DVD and then new Blue-Ray packaging.

I was given the angle and lighting to match as well as a few screen grabs of the prop needed, this was his rubber special glasses he wore in the film.

I proceeded to build them out as a Subdivision Quad model and rendered it at a few angles as well so they could experiment a bit.

As with many daily projects this was a quick half day gig again. Fun and Fast!

Project Review: Planet of the Apes[Original Films] Boxed Set 2009

Here is the final 3D Illustration I built out for the Boxed Set of the original films from back in 2009.

A slightly rotated model here of the Icarus, so we can see the other side window and 'cheek' surface.

The base poly for the body skin for the spaseship.

Subdivision is set at three here for the final renders.

The Texture Map with the screen projection I used for simple alignment.

Here is the packaging as seem online

Project Review
Planet of the Apes[Original Films]
Boxed Set 2009

Client: Fox Home Entertainment via Menagerie Creative.
Creative Director: Cheryl Savala.
Project Date: November 2009.

I had worked with the Creative Director, Cheryl at The Cimarron Group a few years prior when we were both still there in-house, so when she had a 3D Illustration she needed for the Home Entertainment Boxed set of the original Planet of the Apes at her company Menagerie, I was assigned the task of the build.

I am a super fan of the movies themselves, as I grew up with the Mego toys as a kid in the 70's, so this was a property I was very familiar with, and I got to build the space craft for the cover flap, very cool to me.

So, I built the body of the space craft as a sub-division editable polygon, so I could add surface to the main base poly. I then added the vents and various litte jets in the wings, and the model was done. It was a quick project with a fast deadline.

I then moved onto the texture map , and I did a simple projection, since this was a single view render and that would work well, though the map also worked for a few more angles fine too. I used a screen grab of my 3D Model I built in 3D Studio Max, and I then alined all the various parts and built the final color, bump, and specular map.it all that way.

A fun project to finish as it went to print that year.

Project Review: History of Rock and Roll 2004: 3D DVD Packaging Motion Graphics

A frame for the middle of the 3D animation I set up for The History of Rock and Roll's advertising Motion Graphics I did back in 04'.

Here is a frame nearing the end of the the 'fanning out" 3D move I did in 3DS max back in 2004 for The History of Rock and Roll.

A first and Last frame of the box for the DVD's from the animation.

Here is the Poly view of the main file.

A close up on the Polygon Model I built out for the TV spot.

Here we have an exploded view showing all the basic parts I built out for the case. I build it just like the real one with hollow centers to fit the artwork on and all internal supports that would show in the plex etc.

3D DVD Packaging Motion Graphics

Client: Warner Home Video via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Susan Adams.
Project Date: Spring 2004

I had only been in-house at The Cimarron Group for a year when this little gig came by my desk, I was tasked with building out a custom case for six DVD videos for The History of Rock and Roll, for Susan Adams in the Home Entertainment Division at Cimarron.

The disc case was to open up and fan out revealing all six DVD's, as well as the liner notes etc in the front and back sleeves.

I built it all out and set up the file for a SD final render[ Pre-HD]. I also rendered out a few images above showing the construction I did specifically for the plexiglass cases. I used n-Powers,  Power Solids Plug-in for 3DSmax for this, and converted the file over the quads.

A fun project to build light and eventually animate.

Project Review Game Show Key Art for X-Box: 2011 PART II

Here is the new Game Show Set full 3D Illustrated Cover Key Art for Who Wants to be a Millionaire for 2011.

A very simple back cover frame made from the "2011 Edition" plaque used on the cover art above sized to the screen grab.

A Lower 3rd type of asset, this Contestant row with stage floor was rendered out and used for the Key Art for the 3rd years offering of 'The Price is Right' X-box cover I have worked on for Nomadic.

Here is the back cover frames for the assets and description, a quick pick-up render made after the front is signed off on as well.

Here is a line up [again] generously provided to me by my client Greg Orlowski at Nomadic.

Project Review
Game Show Key Art for X-Box: 2011
PART II

Client: Nomadic
Art Director: Greg Orlowski and Wynn Burton.
Project Date: Summer 2011.

In this, my second post for the 2011 versions of Game show Key Art, I have two additional games to review, Who wants to be a Millionaire, and The Price is Right. PART I for 2011 is here.

The main logos for both were reused from the existing logos that were created by me for Greg and Wynn last season.
The X-Box Game Who Wants to be a Millionaire 2011, was a full set and a large build to do. Also, it required the longest rendertime as the entire floor was reflective and refractive, as it was purple plexiglass. Also, the podium is frosted plexiglass, so I used the Sub-Surface-Scattering material in Final Render, there as well to simulate the effect of the lights on the actual podium.

The second was a smaller project with a contestant row with some microphones as well as the old styled "LED" readout in front of the Real Time Characters from the game. I also provided assets for the back covers for the screen grabs from the video game itself, which is a usual pick-up jog after the Key Art for the covers is done.
You can view the 2010: Key Art that I did here.
You can view the 2009: Online game screens for the X-Box titles here.

You can view the 2009 original Key Art here.

Project Review: Brewsters Millions DVD Key Art 3D Illustration Concepts.

The Main Cover concept had Richard Pryor coming out of the center of a $100 Dollar bill and I did the frame in Gold as the holding device for that idea.

The simple Ingot flat is what they ended up using for the finished DVD cover KeyArt.

A Pile of 3D Gold Bars was used on the sleeve inside, but not sure if it made finish.

The Corner Big "B" designed after the etching artwork on a Dollar Bill up around the 1.

Here is the wire-frame of the model. Built fast and dirty so it is all high rez[ No-QUAD Sub-D yet!]

Project Review: Brewsters Millions
DVD Key Art 3D Illustration Concepts.

Client:Universal Pictures Finland via BLT and Associates.
Art Director n/a.
Project Date: March 2002.

This was a fast half day gig at BLT and Associated back in 2002 when I was the in-house 3D Designer for the company, and I was s tasked with doing some little trinkets for the DVD release of the file from 1985 Brewsters Millions starring Richard Pryor and John Candy.

As a kid from the 80's this was a fun project for me to work on though it was a fast and quick assignment, I still enjoyed the stuff I got to experiment with.

My Favorite piece is the big "B" with the wireframe behind it. I made this based on the dollar bill and the etched look it has. All that finished was the big flat ingot with the anisotropic reflection on it, but fun none the less.

Project Review: The Phantom 2040 PART-50

The original Rough for The Promo Poster for The Phantom against Grafton!

A shot of Sagan Cruz and The Phantom 2040.

Phantom 2040-PART L[ 50]
Hand-held Prop Design Drawings

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this 50th post on "The Phantom 2040" television Animation Series from the mid 90's that I had the privilege of working on for almost 3 years, I have posted original sketch concepts for the series I did in 1993.

One of the first orders of business for me to design, was to finish out our promotional booklet for the show, in order to sell it to the networks, and toy company. Many folks do not know is that it is a dual sell simultaneously, in that without a toy line, you will NOT sell the show, and without a show Mattel would not do the toys, so Mattel was an integral part of the project getting the green light.

Above you will find my first draft roughs for a few of the main promotional images done. Once they were approved we had out in-house painters in backgrounds paint them up to my layouts, and our character team did the ink and paint on cels[ Yes Real Cels!] for the finals.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review: GameShow Video Game Key Art Logos PART II

The new Family Feud Logo for 2011 based on my 2010 work.

Hollywood Squares was a new project this year, fun to make the game grid and the Logo for this one.

Another new property for 2010 was this logo as well as some collateral designs for the rest of the package.

The last Game-show Logo I did this season for Nomadic was this Million Dollar Pyramid Logo.

Gameshow Videogame Packaging
3D Illustration and Design PART II

Client: Nomadic
Art Director: Greg Orlowski
Project Date: Spring 2010

I had worked with Greg the prior year on the Key Art packaging for the new Price is Right Video Game, and he returned with a lot more work. I first revised the Family Feud work I did for 2010 for the new 2011 version of the game. Once that was done I addressed three new property's including, Hollywood Squares, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and $1,000,000 Pyramid.

I enjoy making a dimensional version of a logo since there are so many ways to interpret the depth beyond a mere extrusion. the bevels rivets and part lines for a constructed sign is a fun job, and Games are a great subject matter to attack.

To view the 2010 Logos PART I you can see them here.

To view the web online game stages I did for the same properties, you can view them here.

Project Review: Scobby Doo 2002

A four foot long subway sandwich from the MIB Parody Newspaper Ads for Scooby-Doo.

The first draft of the "Egg" Rattan chair for the parody ad.

The final chair had a close back and was used for print ads in newspapers on the MIB opening weekend.

They needed a high resolution collar and tag for Scooby so I made this one for a pay-off One Sheet Design Comp.

Merchandising for the film included a key-FOB and these buttons.

Some graphics applied to popcorn carriers and tubs for the film.

Scooby Doo 2002

Client: Warner Brothers via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Zach Ris, Marcus Almaraz, Jeff Barnett.
Project Date: Summer 2001

One of the earl;y 3D Illustration Projects I did while at BLT and Associates in Hollywood was to do a few shall Illustrations for the Pay-Off One Sheet, but I did a bunch of Merchandising Products that went along with the film.

The Egg chairs and huge sandwich was a parody ad based on the MIB white egg chair look and rather than guns they held the big sandwiches. I had just 2 hours to finish. This project became a textbook case on 3D Illustration, as they were hunting down a wicker hanging chair around town for hours , when I let them know I could design, model, and render one for them in one hour. Once I did that the sandwich was next. FUN!
