Project Review The Phantom 2040 PART CXVIII [118th] More Vehicle Concepts

When Kit Walker becomes The Phantom, his hyper-cycle transforms as well to what we see here.

Here is the original overlay I did for the HERO mode with everything out and ready to go.

I took a sedan I designed and with a little white-out[ WHAT!] I removed the top and added a quick interior to it as seen in this Xerox sketched over. You can view a multi-view of it here.

The Mustang Kit drove in full on COMBAT mode for The Phantom 2040. You can see it color keyed here.

Here is generic flying vehicle I did to fill up a specific shot we had. I created this with a very unique profile unlike the planes and jets we would see up there as well.

More Vehicle Concepts

Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

Today in my 118th Phantom 2040 posting, I have found some scanned in images of vehicles I did for the series to review back in the early 90's.
As a Transportation Design Graduate we dream of future vehicles to design, and this was a great time in my design career to be able to have the creative freedom that is afforded in sci-fi projects, along with being the Art Director on the project, I also got to approve all my ideas as well!

All of Kit Walkers vehicles transformed when he transformed into The Phantom as well so I have a few of these to share today.

There is a TAG on the list to the RIGHT for other Phantom 2o4o entry's, but you can click this as well.

Project Review Wildstorm Productions GEN 13 Feature Film 1996 PART II

Here is a final background I did using a tank designed by Shayne Poindexter a fellow ACCD grad whom I worked with @ Hearst Animation.

In the final act the main airbase is decimated with craters and I helped develop the look of that destruction in this under-drawing layout I did. Final was a 16 field size.

The main Hangar inside as a vertical 12 field PAN.

Art Director: Kevin Altieri
Project Date: Summer 1996

I found a few added drawing that I did back in the 90's on the Wildstorm Productions GEN-13 Comic Book Movie adaptation, so this is my second post for the work I did.

I worked on some background layouts for the production, and did a few dozen layouts used in the film, and today we look at two under drawings and one final piece I have located.

I have not located any copies of the finals for the other two, but the roughs show what I was going with, and this was a basic part of remote working for them, as I would rough out every shot fast as an under drawing first to get approval on view design and proportions.

If approved, I would then move to the final overlay velum drawing final to deliver as seen in the top image above for Gen-13.

I am a huge fan of the designer J. Scott Campbell, so to work on this was a dream job for me, and I got to briefly meet him at the screening where I got these.

Project Review:The Phantom 2040-PART CXII [112th] Character Design Adjustment Overlays

Rebecca Madison the head of the evil Maximum Inc. had many bodyguard B.I.O.T's here is one design I did.

Sean One lived in space and was about 12 feet tall, and this was one of his alternate outfits, like a tight speedo with a bit of a wrap over the shoulder. The little sketch to the side of his knee is how he floats in the show .

A Tracker character with some modifications done to the head, hat, belt, gun, and shoe details. All sketch overlays are 8.5 x 14 xerox with tracing OL's.

A enforcer with a RIOT shield from the show.

Character Design Adjustment Overlays

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

For my Thursday 2D post this week, I have some more character design overlays that I did while at Hearst Animation in Studio City California, back in the 90's working on the TV animated series, The Phantom twenty forty.

When I was hired on, the team had started some added characters but without an Art Director or theme for the series it required adjustments to the details to fit into the Art Nouveau look I was to get established.

I made sure that the belts and shoes would wrap around the person or B.I.O.T.[ Biological Robots] to mirror the Ghostwood vines constantly poking into the city[ like the Phantom himself!].

Project Review:The Phantom 2040: PART CI[101st]-Overlay Character Designs

I did quite a few alternate for the B.I.O.T.'s[ robots] from the TV show, and sometimes it was merely a costume change as seen above, and here, and here.

A Minor modification to Kit Walker[ aka.The Phantom] I tweaked the roll on the collar of his standard coat he wore in the series.

I designed the "Dry-as-a-bone' Aussie styled riding coat you see under the overlay, but this sketch was for some hidden chrome armor he wore underneath it. You can see it colored out here.

Here we  have a pivotal sketch for The Phantom, as up until here I had very organic cuffs here, and here, and Hearst reps from NYC came out to LA, and wanted me to go back a bit and do a blend between the old cuff style and mine so here is a sketch with the new blasters I designed and these modified cuffs and belt overlay designs that went to final here.

 Overlay Character design sketches

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

This is my 101st post my work from the TV animated series, The Phantom 2040 from in the early ninety's, and today I have posted a few more development design sketches I did as overlay work.

Every artist does overlays, as these allow you to build upon the prior design work, and make the needed changes in a quick production fashion, without the need to start over completely.

I had a few rolls of tracing as well as small cut up velum sheets to overlay characters always by my side at Hearst Animation when I worked on the show, and were used in cases like this.

Today I have The Phantom himself, a BIOT, Guran's armor design, and a quick tweak to Kits coat.

When you do production work with a bunch of 'cooks'[ like 9 bosses!] , you must always be ready to change your designs, and being able to separate yourself as an Artist/Designer, from your work is vital so you can get it all done with a proper attitude.

If they did not like the collar, do another and move on, it's just a collar...
Everyone will at one time or another throw a bad pitch!

Behind the Art The Under Drawings PART III

For the Men in Black attraction at Universal Studios Florida ALIEN ATTACK, this is inside Edgar the Bugs mouth, the finale.

For Men in Black as well, this is inside Edgars windpipe.

This was done for Michael Ninn for his futuristic City in Dark Justice here.

The underdrawing I did for the Jungle Cruise Building sketch here.

Behind the Art
The Under Drawings
PART III

I have posted here PART III  in my series of under drawings for various 2D projects.

The under drawing is a vital part of the process I use, to get a speedy result. In advertising and in design work in general, it allows me to work faster, so my clients will get more work. I have developed a few techniques I use to create my designs in a timely fashion.

Today I have a few under-drawings from a variety of my projects to show, some from the Universal Studios Tour MIB attraction Alien Attack, one from the VMK,[ 'Virtual Magic Kingdom'] project, as well as the Futuristic City I did for Michael Ninn for the 3D series he produced Dark Justice.

I have linked a few finals to these as well, to get you into the process involved in the design a bit more so you can see the final results from these. I lock in at this rough stage then finish it up.

I use a hand made perspective grid I make using ship curves, and I do most of these on copy paper, which is abundant and cheap for this. I overlay on Clearprint or 'Vincent' Vellum.

My Prior posts in the series:

PART I  here.
PART II here.

Project Review: Phantom 2040 Part X

The final design for the Multicruiser in Standard Mode[ Civilian].

Overlay sketch-design of First Mode change to "Fight-Mode".

Final Inked Version in Full Attack Mode revealing Skull face on Front.

Phantom 2040: Phantoms Multicruiser

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Fall 1993.

In this tenth installment on Hearst Animations 1990's Television Cartoon , "Phantom 2o4o" I am looking at the Phantoms Multicruiser. The main transportation or flying car in the series were Multicruisers, you have seen some of my designs before. This as one of five main Phantom vehicles and for all the vehicles the had "modes" of operation.

Fan power was the preferred form of levitation and building around that, all Phantom vehicles incorporated a subtle or not-so subtle skull image within the design. For the Multicruiser it would change it's appearance and transform into the other modes, and the skull would finally be the most prominent in the attack mode when the Phantom is doing his job.

The first image is the original sketch design for when Kit Walker[ AKA The Phantom] is cruising around. The second is an overlay showing the first stage of transformation where the front is opened up and the weapons begin to appear. The final image is actually a scan of the final inks showing the last mode and the full skull can be seen of the face of the Multicruiser.

Cheers, THOM
