Project Review 1937 Sterling-J Reconstruction via 3D Printing Vehicle Build Work in Progress-PART II


My 3D STL file was imported to verify scale for 3D Printing by my client.


The fender 3D file I made was used to create the steel plates for the buck for the hand hammered fenders as seen in the CAD build off my model.
 

 The first image of the actual build of the truck. This Semi is massive, a 6 foot tall worker is shorter that the front grill for scale.


Moving around the beautiful build on this 1937 Sterling J utilizing the original cab as the single existing part that the rebuild was made around.

 With the hood opened up a nice passenger side shot on this coach-build.

A bit of the 'Jewelry' with the iconic Sterling Script Logo on the side can be seen here. 3D print files were the most detailed and high-resolution for these parts I made in 3D for the sand casting process as the originals were made.

It has been 4 years since I created the 3D print file for the vehicle reconstruction of the 1937 Sterling J using  3D Printing technology for the new prototype pieces. Trained in Industrial Design Automotive at Art Center,  is was this training that I relied on to complete the base files for the build out.

Fast forward four years and I received pictures of the fresh build of the reconstructed Sterling J going to a show in Reno this Summer 2019 from Roger, and with his permission I am posting these today.

The 3D files were printing in foam for some parts, wax in others and cut into laser cut plates to build bucks so panels like the fenders could be hammered out by artisans the old school way.

The build is not complete but in this stage looks amazing and the team has done an absolutely amazing job.

I will have more posts covering the progress of this first Sterling truck, once it is complete.

Project Review: 1937 Sterling-J: Reconstruction via 3D Printing 2014-15-PART I

 The last version I built included a newly built cab, as the original 3D scan was very rough reflecting the part is currently un-restored. I did a paint test to check the surfaces.

The main progress work is all rendered in an ambient shader to show just surfaces. A 3/4 front low angle.

I have been doing more and more 3D Printing design work, as I was trained in Industrial Design Automotive at Art Center, so naturally a project like this is a dream one, that comes around only a few times in ones career.

As an avid VW and vintage Porsche fan, I was contacted by Roger Dean about a Speedster model I had made[here], and we proceeded to discuss the new technology and use of 3D Printing in the building of classic as well as custom automotive design.

Roger helped get the newly made Hebmüller molds in Germany back, and has had many a Vintage VW grace the pages of Hot VW's over the years, and apart from secret work in that arena, he had this Sterling J project on deck to begin with.

His client owns dozens of Sterling's, an early American Semi Truck Marque, however the beautiful bodywork and Airflow grills are all destroyed and only exist in pictures. 

He has just the cab, so we started by having Scan-Site do a full point cloud scan of the existing cab to match the virtual build to match, and I built around that.

I proceeded to create all the parts needed for this 1937 Sterling Model J to be printed in 3D to build the buck out as well as to cast the aluminum parts as needed.

I've delivered the STL[ stereolithography] 3D Print files and they will be beginning with a 1/5th scale model begin with prior to the full size buck.

Project Review: 3D Pendant Design for 3D Printed replica for Fabrice Meuwissen Photographe Portrait Toulouse PART II

 The first 3D Print Design I did had heavy hammering to it to match the crown look, that I also made for 3D Printing here.

I did an alt, with a lower depth to the hammering. 

The final version "C" had no hammering and was built smooth. 

The final design was also smooth, with an added ring up top for the necklace.

 STEP 1
Build out all individual parts for the Boolean Operation.


STEP II
Place all pieces into the final position for the Boolean in 3D.


STEP III
I always use the Quad-Output option in my Power-Boolean step so they can be printed in 3D.



 STEP IV
Here is the base Poly mesh with the 3D displacement for the hand hammering effect.

A High Rez version with Hammered finish for 3D printing.

I did an ultra High resolution STL export for a detailed 3D Print for use use by
Fabrice Meuwissen

PART II

Creative Direction: Fabrice Meuwissen.
Project Date: March 2014.

A year ago in March 2014, I was contacted to help create custom props for Fabrice Meuwissen, a Professional Photographer out of France after he saw my work I did for the crowns models for Game of Thrones Season 2.

I was given a few small 3D Printing, Stereolithography gigs over a few weeks to create custom props for his Photo shoots, and today I am covering a small metal pendant I created for him to use.

As a trained Industrial Designer, my schooling prepared me to work in 3D Printing as I am trained in Dimensional Design, Ergonomics,and Manufacturing, so I can design something that will actually work in the real world, and this small prop was refined a bit in a few passes, and delivered.

Today's post also is a bit of a simple tutorial on how I make these objects in 3DSmax using the great N-power Pro-boolean Plug-In built into the product now.

Project Review: 3D Crown Design for 3D Printed replica for Fabrice Meuwissen Photographe Portrait Toulouse PART-I

In my first delivery I did the crown design in hammered and smooth. in order to do this hammered version I built it out as a quad model added subdivision, and displaced the model with the dents.


Here is the same 3D asset with the displacement removed so it is smooth.


A multi-view render with base dimensions for the prop.


I re-export the STL[ stereolighography] file back into my 3D software to ensure there are no surprises for my clients.


I saved out a small trim ring of the base of this crown 3D design for fitting.


 The final and revised design with notes showing the changes made.

PART I

Creative Direction: Fabrice Meuwissen.
Project Date: March 2014.

Back in March I was contacted to help create custom props for Fabrice Meuwissen, a Professional Photographer out of France after he saw my work I did for the crowns models for Game of Thrones Season 2.

I was given reference images to get the style desired, and I was off to create a model that was to be printed in 3D.

As a trained Industrial Designer, my schooling prepared me to work in 3D Printing as I am trained in Dimensional Design, Ergonomics,and Manufacturing, so I can design something that will actually work in the real world.

I got base dimension and created a first pass model. Though it was well received, it was costly due to the intricate details especially around the rim that were hollow.

In the revision round, I filled them in as seen above. I also saved out a sizing ring to print a test to ensure it would fit the fashion model before spending the money on the full sized one.

3D Printing also allows the end client to scale at full size of 1 to 1, or 1. 1.1 etc., so bigger and smaller versions can be printed as well.

I will be doing a follow up post with a walk thru the build itself as a tutorial in the future.

Sure-Grip International PART IV Rock Skates Truck Redesign 2011

The Multi-View shot of the final re-design I did for Sure-Grip International back in 2011 for the Rock Skates truck.

The subdivided 3D Printer build is what I exported out for the prototyping. I also added the molded axles for prototyping as seen in the DA45 here.

Sure-Grip International
PART IV
Rock Skates Truck Redesign 2011

Client: Sure Grip International.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date:  September-December 2011.

This is my fourth post covering work I have done for Sure Grip International[ SGI], the largest and oldest skate manufacturer in the USA.

I did some 3D-Logo work posted here, and here, I also designed the look of the new DA45 Plate The Avenger, as a sharp edged stealth look for them and that design post can be seen here.

Today I have posted  a simple redesign of the Rock Truck they sell on a very popular entry level skate. The truck was granfathered over when SGI bought the skate from Rock Skates so they wanted to rebrand the truck with the current SGI logo, as well as adding some of the design forms found in the flatter surfaced DA45 their flagship truck at the moment.

We had already used 3D Printing to help visualize the other projects so I created this design in the same manner with a metal prototype being made from this model output as a STL [ stereolithograhy ] file for 3D printers.

I am an avid Quad Skater myself, so designing skate items for SGI was a dream job.
