Project Review Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow PART IV- Main Robot 3D Illustrations

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
PART IV- Main Robot 3D Illustrations

This is my fourth posting on the 3D illustration [ and a bit of Motion Graphics] work that I performed when I was in-house as the 3D designer over at BLT and Associates in Hollywood, CA, for the film World of Tomorrow[ Sky Captain].

Today I am focusing on the main Robot I built out prior to the film having CG yet. Often I get a concept sketch and need to build out a 3D model based on a sketch, so I am not working form a finished refined CG model but a concept so I have to interpret the sketched design into reality[ virtual though it is]

So for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, I built out the main robot from a blueprint given to us by the creators. It was used in multiple Movie Poster Designs that I did at BLT and Associates back in 2002 a decade back now.

Project Review Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow PART VII-Whip-Arm Robot

Here is the final Image produced for this Whip Robot from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow that I built out while at BLT in 2002 for the posters.

PART VII-Whip-Arm Robot

This is my seventh posting on Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow, and today we look an another robot I had to build out for the posters for the film, the Whip-arm Robot.

This robot has a very small part in the film ,when the main base of the hero is attacked by a group of these rascals. I had just under a day to build, texture, and render out these views for the in-house Art Directors to use in their comp ideas for the presentation to Paramount and the Director.

This robot was a fun one, with the body being built using nPowers Power NURBS plug-in, and I then converted to them to Polygons for render. Lots of compound molded parts on this one, and I had just got that great plug-in tool for 3DS max over at BLT so I used it on this design.

Project Review Solar Energy Robot Design 2011 PART II

The Final Design with the Character Design Sheet with turns: Full render Medium REZ.

The final was to have minimal "anamatronic" use, so the arms would move around to greet folks at the conventions.


A a subdivision model it is good from long shots, to close ups and the data can be used for 3D printing of the parts with the subdivision set high, or it can also be converted for Solid Works data as well with this.

PART II

This is my second posting on this little "Energy Robot" I designed out for the AIM Agency here in California back in 2011, and today I cover what we ended up with as a final to be built out for the convention use.

Shorty, as I called him became that way when I took out an entire digit from the legs to bring the size of the Robot to a proportion so we could get a bigger touch screen in the chest. I also simplified the solar arrays and wrap mounted them right onto the "Bot".

The character "Sunny" a Solar Energy Robot also needed some sunglasses added to give him a bit more fun in his disposition, so they were built as well.

The client liked the Golds Gym bodybuilder feel to him which was a bit intentional as I called him a Shorty Terminator, and the glasses helped that out as well.

It is always fun doing Robots.

Project Review: Solar Energy Robot Design 2011-PART I

 The main front view of the robot I designed for the AIM Agency back in October of 2011.

 A 3/4 worms-eye view, or kids view shot, as it needed to be a happy robot, not menacing.

 This birds-eye shot shows the solar panels on his head, they were to be animated to attract attention with a constant movement and adjustment.

 A multi-view showing the full 360 design as this was to be a free standing unit once built out.

Solar Energy Robot Design 2011
PART I

Client: The AIM Agency.
Art Direction: Jeff Symon.
Project Date: October 2011.

Every once in a blue moon I get to do a 3D Character design, and for this one, I was contracted by the AIM Agency to design out a little solar robot for a trade show project they had, and along with the 3D design, it had to contain a small PC touch screen as well as the final application was an actual manufactured prop, so I was off to work. 

I roughed out the design in 3D and proceeded to create a little robot that was simple, friendly, and a clean basic white color with chrome accents. It also needed some sort of visible solar power associated with the design as this was to showcase that technology.

This is my first of three passes at the design before the final was done, and I will be posting more parts in the future  on the progression in the design as well as the bidding for the actual prop, so stay tuned.

As a side note, right after this job, I was hired to work on a super cool Disney/PIXAR related property and modeled out hundreds of robots all in subdivision, so this was a good warm up to that long nine month contracted gig.

Project Review: Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue Shanghai China 3D Designer-Modeler 2011 PART II

A Color Pass test on the Round one Colossus Bot [ Robot ]

Round two Colossus Robot. This was to be on the far backround on the matte painted wall for the Themed Attraction. 

The Crane Bot was excavating the the foreground and would be place up front to the guests.

I loved the Roller Bots. The torso on wheels so-to-speak.

 One of my own designs with 'shrimp like' feet that would move very slowly[ comic relief]

Crawler Robot from the underside has a bode section based on a spider.

The above Crawler Zorg Bot in low poly base mesh[ quads ]. I mirrored the bot to show two views per render for each design presentation. 

The Round Two Stealth version of the Crawler bot. This one made it into the attraction. 

The Scavenger Bot for Round One that follows the Zorg Bot from the film[ modified torso] 


A much earlier version of the Scavenger bot incorporated a target that could fly off the robot.

Back to my favorite Robot, the Roller Bot is stealth design now. This made it into the Theme Park Attraction in China as well.

PART II

Client: Walt Disney Imagineering.
Creative Director: Scot Drake.
Art Director: Christopher Lee.
Project Date: October 2011-May 2011

Today I am posting my second part for the 3D Visual Development work I did at Walt Disney Imagineering back in 2011 for the Shanghai China theme park attraction, "Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue", based upon the Pixar Toy Story property.[ PART One]

I was brought to assist the Design Team in 3D development of the 3D Robots and 3D Characters for the attraction that they were developing a look. Scot Drake was the Creative Director, with the Chief Show Designer Christopher Lee.


Today is PART II I have posted many additional robots I created for the Planet Zorg. Some are the first round to match the look of the Bots in the first Toy Story film,and some are the 'Stealth' second round with an updated sharp edge look to bring the designs into a modern context.

PART VIII-Arachnid Robot

This is my eighth posting on Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow, and today I have posted the Arachnid Robot from the film that I made a 3D copy for the print advertising campaign.

About half my work is reverse engineering a prop from a feature film that is not finished, or we simply do not have access to enough photography, and so I end up building it for the posters, and for WOT[ World of Tomorrow], I did half a dozen various robots from the film for the large Art Direction team for over at BLT.

This one was just over a half day to complete[ about 5 Hrs] and I was able to deliver a few renders for the final presentation of comps to Paramount.

Look for more robots from the film in the weeks to come.

Project Review: I-Robot [2004]- 3D Gear Logo-PART II

 The Main first design I did of the iRobot 3D Icon Logo in brushed steel with a cool blue reflection.

I did this alt with a black-and-white reflection map and lighting set-up in 3D, so it was mostly monochromatic.

 I then rendered out this fully transparent version. I had done a transparent glass Walther PPK for the bond series at BLT,and this was referenced for the look.

The legibility with glass is a serous issue to deal with so for the next pass I put a wider softer diffused highlight on the face of the logo to cover some details out front. 

This was a post FX built comp in Photoshop, that I had overlay and underlay shuffling with the two versions of steel and glass to create a transparent aluminum captain!

  The base exterior 3D Logo build file in ambient wireframe for iRobot.

 The exploded view shows all the bits and pieces inside this 3D logo. This was referenced for my Astroboy Logo with robot parts inside years latter, as seen here.

Close up details included heat-sinks, gears chains, fans and various resistors etc.

 I scaled and fit these parts to fit inside each letter.

Retainer springs posts and some sub structure was needed inside these letters.

A reverse shot shows the hollow face type that was filled with these pieces.

The chain was comp'ed in fast so I did not go fully around the gear[ not enough time].

I also did this alternate, a reverse with the type cut fully thru the "I-box". This is the steel render. 

The transparent version with a very electric blue based on the light color on the robots from a film shot we finally received to match color to.
 
 Another combo version with metal and glass rendered out and painted over in Photoshop by the AD's

 I did a final version for this type layout with a volumetric light coming out of the 'type hole' in this darker 3D render of the 3D Logo for iRobot I did back in 2004.

PART II

Client: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. Via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director(s): Chad Robertson and Calvin Sumler.
Project Date: Late Fall 2003.

My first job for The Cimarron Group was to do some 3D logos for the upcoming i-Robot feature with Will Smith. I had worked with Chad Robertson over at BLT so this was a continuation of our working relationship, just now moved over to another company, so we explored transparent logos with gears and misc. machinery inside the type.

Today I cover in detail that first concept I did in PART II.

I was asked to build out a hollow logo with robot parts inside, so as usual I was given the type layout, this time as a bitmaps, so I used Vector-Magic to convert it to an Illustrator file to build off of,and I proceeded to fill the logo with parts.

None of the logos finished, but it was a good exercise that helped work out some challenges with transparent logos that were used a few more times over the following years.
