Project Review: S.W.A.T. The Movie 2003 PART IV Night-Vision Binocular Model for MGFX Teaser Trailer

My deliver was a OBJ export to the 3D Animation Dept and this was the final 3D Model I designed and made.

A render with DOF[ Depth-of--Field] as seen in the Teaser.

A Birds-eye overhead front shot of the 3D Night Vision Goggles in Ambient with wires.

The fully textured and rendered  S.W.A.T. Night Vision Goggles.

I built this Pre-Sub-D, so some funky geometry on those thumb screws.
I'd go full Quads today in a build.

The 3D file still renders out fine.

A Side view, with the hand grip as the only full Sub-D asset in the build. They are actually a cut down version of the front grip from the M4 Carbide model here.

A Side View 3D Render fully textured with DOF and ready as a style frame.

The 3/4 rear view shows the lens inside the tubes with the appropriate glass, O-ring,and lens retention threads.

The rendered back shot of the SWAT Night Vision Goggles , also used for the Home Alone work latter on here.

Exploded View shows the build.

A second render of the prop as an exploded view of the 3D Night Vision Binoculars I made for the Teaser Trailer for the film S.W.A.T. back in 2003.

PART IV

Night-Vision Binocular Model for MGFX Teaser Trailer

Client: Columbia Pictures Inc. via BLT and Associates.
Art Directors: Myself.
Project Date: Winter 2003.

It this, my fourth posting for the work I did for the TV to film adaptation of S.W.A.T., from almost a decade back now, today I am covering the Night Vision Binoculars I designed and made for the Theatrical Teaser Trailer back in 2003 for Matt Hartle the head of 3D-Animation.

I regularly built 3D Illustrations for the Print work at BLT, but I also did quite a bit of work for the MGFX[ Motion-Graphics] team for the AV Trailers as well, and for the new at the time film, S.W.A.T., I was asked by Matt in the 3D Animation dept., to make some very high resolution models for the back plates for the internal and the Title Card graphics.

I have more posts on S.W.A.T., both for Print and AV 3D Models I made that I will try and post up in the future, so keep an eye out.

Project Review: S.W.A.T. the Movie 2003-PART III-Tactical Personnel Van

A straight on back shot of the S.W.A.T. van that I built for the feature film marketing. This was designed around a few comps done by the team of Art Directors on the 'pod' for the project back in 2003 while at BLT and Associates as 3D Designer.

A Worms Eye angle looking up with the back door on this SWAT van, with the back opened up with a few cast members coming at 'Ya.

A low angled back view with a bit of 'dutch' on the camera, with the back closed up again.

This overhead shot shows that all details were limited to what was seen in the renders so no front or even side details.

I went to great detail to be accurate on the door locks and stays that keep the back doors open on these vans so that they would be accurate in style for the iconic vans used by S.W.A.T.

Here is that back shot in polygons so you can see the level of detail that went into the individual parts on the van.

Project Date: Winter 2002-3.

It this third posting for the work I did for the TV to film adaptation of S.W.A.T., from almost a decade back now. I did this work while I was still an in-house 3D designer at BLT and associates back in 2003. I had done a couple dozen 3D Logos for the film posted here, as well as helping out with the teaser trailer.

In today s blog post we look at the back end of a typical Personnel van used by S.W.A.T. teams in the past, so they wanted an iconic look for the teaser with a van doors.

I built this 3D scene out as all hi-rez, as this was before I perfected my quad modeling techniques over the last decade,  and this was a fast turn around as usual so I did a speed model of the van.

I built out just the back of the van, and a bit of the sides, since we were just creating teaser shots for a few comps using the backside of this van for the posters.

I have a few more posts on S.W.A.T., that I will try and post up these in the future, so keep an eye out.

Project Review: S.W.A.T. The Movie 2003 PART IV The Detectives Office

Here is a rough render showing the various virtual furnishings I created for the shot we were to use in the Teaser Trailer for S.W.A.T.

This Polygon render shows the basic build[ non-quad].

The main office parts[ except a floor] was exported as an OBJ for the Maya pipeline.

As a cabinet builder I created the drawer slides and hardware for the Craftsman furniture.

The desk from the back shows the power cord draped off the edge as well as the various desk props.

The Mission Hammered Copper Mica Lamp I built out.

The vintage desk plane clock is seen foreground here[ subdivision is low in this shot.]

Here is the file cabinet with a n opened drawer showing the build details.

It this my fourth posting for the work I did for the TV to film adaptation of S.W.A.T., from almost a decade back now, today I am covering the virtual set I built for a green-screen live action move for the Theatrical Trailers.

At the time the script called for a move from a Laptop PC on a desk in a Detectives office, out a window into the city, so I created a series of virtual furniture for the opening shot.

I built out the various pieces in an Arts and Crafts style, and exported them to the 3D Animation Department at BLT for use, however at delivery they changed direction and instead went up on the rooftop and did the move from there. A fun build and as a cabinet builder myself I enjoy the virtual woodworking as well.

I have a few more posts on S.W.A.T., that I will try and post up these in the future, so keep an eye out.

Project Review: SWAT movie- 2003 Part II-M4 Model

The SWAT M-4 firearm I built for the Motion Graphics Teaser Trailer back in 2003.

We were going to go inside the gun, so I built it hollow which takes double the time, here is an exploded view showing the components built.

The bullets and all internals were built.

An overhead view of the S.W.A.T. M-4 rifle.

This render shows the geometry and topology of the 3D Model I built.

An overhead view of the Model I built for Matt Hartle to animate for MGFX.

S.W.A.T. The Movie 2003PART II: M-4 X-Ray Full Model

Client: Columbia Pictures Inc. via BLT and Associates.
Art Directors: n/a
Project Date: Winter 2002-3.

It this second posting for the work I did for the ad campaigns for the release of S.W.A.T. back in 2003 for the Motion Graphics teaser that our in house Animation Director Matt Hartle set up.

I built the models in 3DSmax and exported them out to him via OBJ[ Pre FBX days]. It should be noted that these are not quad models, as I was still developing the modeling technique to be able to do that fast enough for the turn around times usually associated with advertising, so I did a fast model of this one.

This model had a complex camera move go around it in the original concept, with assembly and disassemble done, so I built all parts two sided with enough internals to fire a bullet out of the 3D representation as a virtual M-4.

You can view the render in glass here from a prior posting.

Project Review: Home Alone 4: Home Entertainment Key Art 3D Illustration 2003.

Here is the only 3D logo I did for the project , it was a brass plate with mini screws in the design as this was mounted to a door for the comp design.

Here is the 3D Illustration I did for a Night-Vision-Goggle setup that the main character uses, a re-use from S.W.A.T.

Here is a 3/4 view showing the high rez mesh I built for the Night vision prop from Home Alone.

A basic beige panel door, simple, but this is what was used. Sometimes 3D Illustration has no "glamor", but it is effective as a tool for these times over stock or custom photography on price and ease of use due the the Smart-3D nature of these assets.

Here is the internal staircase I rebuild as a virtual set. It is not furnished due to most being covered with "big heads" as well as budget limitations on time.

Here we see the finished DVD cover with that door I did.

Home Alone 4
Home Entertainment Key Art 3D Illustration 2003.

Client:  ABC via BLT and Associates.
Direction: Matt Rice.
Project Date: April 2003

I did plenty of 3D Illustrations for the various teams in-house at BLT whwn I was running my one man show there, and I was put on the Home Alone 4 ,a direct to video project for Matt Rice in the Home Entertainment division back in 2003 almost a decade ago.

I did some simple 3D props, like the panel door you see above[ which is all that finished], as well as a highly complex prop of some night vision goggles that I modified and used for SWAT as well.

I also did the staircase interior and this was an early GI, Global Illumination project I did the first mothe I used the software[ so excuse the speclkeling artifacts  :o) ].

THe project did finish and I rendered it at 5000 pixels wide for the final[ typical size].

Project Date: Winter 2002-3.

While at BLT I moved back and fourth between Print and AV and these logos were initially used for the Print work. Later on in the year we hired in Matt Hartle to head up Animation for the small 1 man 3D team of me, and I provided a bunch of Props along with a final Logo that was used in the Teaser Trailer.

3D Firearms PART I

Since my first days in 3D illustration I have been building firearms. My first was a Walther PPK for James Bond in the World is not Enough where the theme was Ice, so I built a fully transparent gun with all internal workings.

Since then I have built from scratch about 6-8 firearms with about half being full models with all internals as well. A few are for sale online from my old employer The Cimarron Group.

Cheers, THOM
