Project Review: Star Wars Trilogy PART III- Logos

A Polished aluminum StarWars Logo with a pattern brushed face.

A Polished aluminum Star Wars Trilogy Logo tipped back into space ala.' the opening title scroll they made famous.

A spaceship hull material is used on this Trilogy Logo for StarWars.

A patterned blue surface as we explored various color schemes for the package.

A variation on the standard Star Wars title replaced with "SW", here is the fire-hot back lit logo in 3D.

The final Logo I did was used for mock ups presented.

Client: Lucas Film LTD via The Cimarron Group.

Art Director: Cheryl Savala.
Project Date: Spring 2004.

The re-re-release on DVD of the Star Wars Trilogy packaging seems to come out every few years and I did 3D Illustrations for the packaging back in 2004 while I was working for the Home Entertainment division of the Cimarron Group for Cheryl Savala who was the Creative Director for the projects I did for DVD's.

In this posting, I focus on the 3D Logos I did for the project. It was a fast 3/4 day project and the logo needed some "looks" done quickly to review for applications of the packaging and standees.

I did about 15 looks for the standard logo, and two for the SW Trilogy version we did as well.

Project Date: Spring 2004.

The re-re-release on DVD of the Star Wars Trilogy packaging ended up using my Darth Vader 3D Illustration to blend into it, but early on, one of the first jobs I did for Cheryl Savala ,who was Creative Directing in Home Entertainment at The Cimarron Group was these Light sabers.

Always a fun project to build out Sci-fi stuff, and Star Wars came from my own childhood so the job was a pleasure.

As a Side the Model was re-used for the FANBOYS trailer and ended up being used for the trailers and was also put on the title sequence of the film itself.

Project Review:Star Wars Trilogy DVD Packaging

The Finished Full Render[inset shows final packaging].

The Wire Reference Model with the surface model started at the nose.

LORD VADER

Client: Lucas Film LTD via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director Cheryl Savala.
Project Date: Spring 2004.

The DVD Trilogy set was coming out yet again and we were tasked in creating the packaging for it. I was tasked with building out Darth Vaders iconic Helmet, and as usual in the Advertising world I had just over a day to do it.

This where I used techniques from automotive design to build this out quickly and accurately. You can see above that I built out a wire model for the basic structure, as the mask is basically like a car, a continuous single surface with fillets and rounds as this is a molded part.

Once I got the proportions and main surfaces of the face done in the wire "reference model", I started with a cylinder at the nose and went from there. The total time was about 10 Hrs to model the full job with 2 Hrs of material and pre-lighting before I did the 4500x 6600 LARGE final artwork. So I delivered this to Cheryl on time under budget at 12 Hrs.

Sadly the only piece that was used was the chrome points from the mouth, as they went with a stylized illustration instead for the finish.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review: The Phantom 2040- PARTLXXVI [76]-Main Character Design Adjustments

Sean-One was the tallest character as he lived in a space station so with zero gravity he got even taller. This is the overlay I did to bring the shapes of his suit to conform with the designs I did for the B.I.O.T.'s in the show. Here he is in color.

Vaingloria was the 2040 version of Madonna, with songs sung by Debbie Harry from Blonde fame. I added more curves to the outfit and then did the color key.

Not much to do with Sagan Cruz, so I added a wrapping and interlocking holster to her outfit and adjusted the boot design slightly with some louvered details.
Hey, I did go to Car Design school so if I can punch in a few louvers I will! :o)

Dr. Jak, our 2040 Howard Stern was voiced by Mark Hamill, know as Mr. Skywalker to those of us old enough to have been there in 76'. I modified his outfit and added wraps etc to his look.

Guran, Kit Walkers sidekick and mentor, he a had slight adjusting as well and some two piece boot designed to add in the interlocking look to him. Here he is in color.

Phantom 2040-PART LXXV [76th]
Main Character Design Adjustments

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this, my 76th post on the Hearst Animation Productions hit, The Phantom 2040, a television animated show from 1995. I have posted today the design overlay drawing that I did for some of the main characters for the show.

Before I worked at Hearst Animation Productions, they had contracted work out to Peter Chung as his MTV hit, Aeon Flux was at it's peak back in 93', and they wanted to develop The Phantom in this new gaunt look that he developed for those characters. Peter had provided design sketches for all the main characters, and once his contract work was done, they began to develop the city backgrounds using Paul Lasaine for this work.

Once I came in 1993, due to the recommendation of Paul Lasaine, I developed a basic theme for the show, and this was first based on the proportions of Peters characters, and secondly I had just finished a themed restaurant in Beverly Hills and I was well versed in a few Architectural styles and so I went with my new found Arch-Love, Art Nouveau.

I felt the wrapping and interlocking floral fluid shapes would be a great theme for Sci-Fi, as most has been in the "Nurnies" look made famous with Star Wars with big geometry shapes covers with tons of little tiny unrecognizable details. I pitched something a bit different, and they liked it!

So, Rather than a actual real-life proportion of an 8 head tall character, I did 12-15 head tall characters and made them all gaunt thin. This combined with Art Nouveau as the architectural world, and we start to see The Phantom 2040 look come together.

The last big piece was the stretched tall and thin theme, and this came directly from when I was a kid. If you have ever seen a Cinema-Scope 70mm film squished on an old TV you will remember how thin everyone was, and this was the look I was after. I wanted the doors to look like mail slots in the walls where these overly gaunt creatures would live. A very different world indeed.

So these are simple overlays that I did to slightly modify the outfits of the designs done by Peter. These were designed a year prior to me coming onto the project as Art Director and Conceptual Designer, so I adjusted the shapes a bit, to add in an Art Nouveau feel as well as just some basic art adjusting.

There is a TAG on the list to the RIGHT for other Phantom 2o4o entry's, but you can click this as well.

Project Review: The Cimarron Group-3D-Department Promotional Screens 2008

I did the animated splash screen for the Portrait-Promotional in-house HD monitors, that was re-purposed to the AV department for all our outgoing AV work.

From selling generic 3D Models online, to iconic architecture for film, I also did 3D Architectural Visualizations, here Countrywide was highlighted.

As a Graduate from Art Centers Transportation Design program, building 3D cars is a large part of what I did at The Cimarron Group.

As an avid VW fan, building a 3D Herbie was a dream job. This asset was used in print and AV for the film Advertising campaign.

3D-Logos are my 'bread-n-butter', so I created a screen to showcase some then current Images.

I did a lot of 3D-Illustration work for the Film, Night at the Museum, this was a Project Specific Image I made for In-House Promotion.

For our in-house Home-Entertainment Division, I did 3D-Illustration work for packaging various Star Wars Properties.

A Project Specific Poster highlighting some of the 3D Design work I did for Superman Returns[ 2007].

Here is a Project Specific Promotional Image for the X-Men 3 Work I did.

The Cimarron Group
3D-Department Promotional Screens 2008

Client: The Cimarron Group.
Art Direction: Thom Schillinger.
Project Date:Summer 2008.

In November 2003,I set up the 3D Design Department, in-house at The Cimarron Group, and provided 3D -Design, 3D-Illustration, and 3D-Animation services to the existing other 11 departments in-house at the Agency, and each department was asked to create some promotional images for the various HD monitors located throughout the company.

Each department was tasked with providing a set of images to display on the HD monitors that were rotated to portrait format, to emulate one of our main products,One-Sheets. My 3D Department was asked to provide specific work that the Owner wanted to showcase.

These Images provided our guests with a quick 'sketch' of what we offered via the 3D Design Department at The Cimarron Group.

Project Review: The Phantom 2040- PARTLXXXIII [83rd]-Misc Prop Design Sketches

Heisenberg was a fractal B.I.O.T. and shape shifted to form this tank treaded wagon for show 15.

A lot of stuff floats in Sci-Fi, and with The Phantom this was not different. I put fans almost everywhere I could and the rest used Gravitational Drives, like this floating Pallet cart used in a bunch of shows.

An enclosed "tall and thin" elevator car that "floats" as well. Even a box can be soft and have some curved details as seen here.

A floating servers cart would fly by with Hor'derves and food.

A Barbell workout weight[ tall and thin!] sketch design I did back for The Phantom.

Phantom 2040-PART LXXXIII [83rd]
Misc. Prop Design Sketches

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

This will be my 83rd post on my Art Direction, and Conceptual Designer roles for The Phantom 2040, and today I am posting some miscellaneous concept drawings I did for the various props for each show.

I worked on designing about 95% of all props for the 52 episodes of The Phantom 2040, and each show would have anywhere from 24 to 48 props to create. About half were re-used from a prior episode so I had two dozen items per week to create based on the script

Today I have posted these fairly basic designs, yet even with the small stuff, I wanted to stay away from the boxy sharp edge look that was the staple of designing Sci Fi since the greebles from Star Wars debuted, and get to the Art Nouveau wrapping and interlocking soft curved look to everything in the world. I also adjusted proportions to make standard stuff taller or longer to fit the proportions of the world of The Phantom 2o4o.

If you are a FAN of The Phantom 2040, and on FACEBOOK, there is a group dedicated to the show here.
