Project Review: Daredevil [2002]- PART IV; Additional Title Treatments- Double-D Icons.

Aluminum Daredevil DD's, overlapping and stair-stepped back on a brushed anodized metal back plate.

This Dare Devil font was taken from a comic cover and I applied the same look as the top image.

I removed the back plate, and added in a red lower volumetric light to stream across the Daredevil two metal D's.

One of the high contrast looks I did with shadow contrast set to maximum so there was little to no gradient in any of the long graphic shadows

I extruded back 100x these two D's and put a basic high contrast red on them with the camera lowered down for this DareDevil icon idea from 2002.

Brushed Aluminum DD's on a hex metal rusted back plate. High contrast still in the lighting but realistic textures were combined in this Title Treatment.

I used High contrast light and shadows with a realistic metal texture on these skinny Daredevil D's, and added some post FX with the highlight glows.

Inset squared out Double D's with a little gloss added to the material for the type so I could get that thin sharp highlight.

A design with the D's stacked vertical with a dark feel and mini lighting glints, a very second read type of approach.

Another D inset inside the other one, for this Daredevil Icon. I went dark and moody with the lighting on this one as well, so we had bright to dark options in the full presentation.

A double stack Title with a holding device with two different scaled bevels with the high contrast light and texture look.

I did a back lit glass version here with the volumetric light rays coming past, so I dropped in these honeycomb surface textured metal ones to see the look it would produce with the red lighting reflecting in the cool steel.

Another up angle on two interlocking D's with a post glow added while sitting on a textured back plate to emulate a red flat'ish carbon fiber material.

PART IV
Additional Title Treatment Double-D Icons.

Client: 20th Century FOX via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Josiah Ludovico

Project Date: Summer 2002.

I see that a new Daredevil TV series is coming out in 2015, so I dug up a few more pieces from over a decade ago from when I worked on this advertising campaign for the film Daredevil in 2002, and I have added more 'DD' icons in this, my fourth posting for the film.

The Interlocked D's are an Icon long used in Dare Devil, so I created more than thirty variations based on vector files provided to me by the GFX team.

I did some photographic looks with realistic textures, but I did a full series of looks that were very high contrast to have a propaganda poster feel to the 3D with blocked shadows and bold shapes as well.

This was a typical exercise when I was an in house 3D Designer, in that I was given a day or two to explore a title in 3D to show the client all options. A fun experience and a great subject matter.

Project Review:Daredevil PART III-Building Icons

A worms-eye view looking up to the sky at two Iconic D's that form the Double D Icon for the teaser for Daredevil.

I took this design further and added details with windows, railings, fire escapes, AC units and a building brick exterior for this final pass on Dare Devil back in 2002.

A big floating block with each "D" cut into connecting sides on the block.

A version where the two D"s crisscross each other to form a Daredevil Icon up high in the sky looking down at the city.

Another down angle comp idea with the top surface of the building,  baloney cut to form a 'knife angle' look to the two D's for Daredevil.

PART III Building Icons

Client: 20th Century FOX via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Josiah Ludovico

Project Date: Summer 2002.

It has been a decade since I worked on this advertising campaign for the film Daredevil, and in this post, my PART III for my work on the project, I have put up a series of 3D illustrations that I did for Art Director Josiah Ludovico at BLT.

His idea was to do a variety of stylized buildings that together form the two D's in the Daredevil Icon with the Double D's. I did a variety of designs, and angles with cross-crossed D's, and parallel ones, and some floating in the clouds[ like I did for World of Tomorrow].

Some were very cartoon-ish and stylized, and some were more realistic. These realistic passes did go the final round, but were passed by for the finals by the client.

Project Review: DareDevil 2003-PART I

I finished the buildings on the sides as the up-rez of the photos was too costly over 3D.

Full Text Logo from Comic book done in 3D.

High Contrast 2D look Logo.

Back-lit Glass Double "D"s.

Double "D"s in brushed steel on leather.

Energy Double "D"s with braille rivets.

A two layer Double "D" logo in higher contrast with a bit more gradients.

Another High Contrast Double D based closer to the original Logo.

DAREDEVIL!
PART I

Client: 20th Century FOX via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Rick Lynch and Eddie Segura.

Project Date: Summer 2002.

Having done a few Superhero logos so far during my first year at BLT, I moved on to many more including the new Daredevil film with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. The logo with the interlocked double "D"s was essential as well as a stylized version of the comic name. I experimented with leather, steel, and glass in the logos, as well as doing some ultra high contrast 3D logos that feel almost 2D. I also hid a bit of braille into the rivets in a few ideas playing on the main characters skills as a blind superhero. they all spell out daredevil.

Project Review: Daredevil PART II

These 'Corner Icons' were designed to add to any poster or artwork for Dare Devil, this one has a deep internal extrusion that gives it a thin lip so you achieve a deep shadowing inside the font.

Here I used a brushed Red aluminum with a nice warm highlight for Daredevil in 2002.

His leather suit inspired a few designs where I applied the texture to the logo itself.

A One Sheet Idea for a Teaser Poster had two big metal D's with a volumetric red light casting down over the logo.

Here I took the above logo and placed it on a leather surface and dropped camera down to a worms eye look.

Two 'squatty' looking Brushed top metal D's on a corrugated tin wall with some procedural rusting achieved with the Simbiont Plug-In.

Another High Contrast Double D very tall and on a surface with some texture bump but a clean red color, you can see others here, here, and here.

PART II

Client: 20th Century FOX via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Rick Lynch and Eddie Segura.

Project Date: Summer 2002.

It has been a few years since my first post so I thought I would put up a few more of the icon Double "D" logos I did for the film Daredevil back in 2002 a decade ago.

These were early on in my 3D logo building days a decade back and we explored about a dozen conceptual directions. Today I have a both the 'bug' or little corner icon double D, as well as a full one sheet teaser logo with a full 3D field background done for the premiere.

I have a few added images I will post this year as well as we explored architectural logos made from architecture and the like, so stay tuned.

Project Review: Silver and Black: Black Cat and Silver Sable

3D Title Treatments January 2018

Client:  Columbia Pictures, Marvel, Sony Pictures via BOND
Project Date:  January 2018.
Direction: Patrick Dillon.

I was called in by Patrick Dillon at BOND to work on a Comic Book Film adaptation for Marvel Comics Film the Black Cat and Silver Sable characters called: Silver and Black back in January of 2018. The project began in 2009, and it ended in February 2018 and you can read up about it here.

I was provided a packet with Adobe Illustrator vector files from Patrick and his team to create 3D Logos for. I did research into the history and look of the two characters as well as the history of the logo used in the comics. Black Cat wears a sexy black latex/leather as her tight outfit so some of that look was used by me. Silver Sable was in a metal Chrome like outfit hence the Silver tech design for that name in the title.

Typically when I begin, I first go through the vectors to equalize them and fix any issues I might find. I also convert any bitmaps supplied into vector files too if I need to build them out in 3D, so I can build off of the vector itself, it becomes the 3D object via extrusion and subdivision.

This work did not make it to finish for the final Key Art as the project was sidelined indefinitely the past 8 years. As always, a majority if what I do done not get uses as many projects are pro production development work, and this is typical in the Film industry.

I have worked on quite a few Comic Book based properties , and as an avid reader and collector I find these gigs very enjoyable. Most of these projects are here on the blog and you can search them out top Left Goggle Search Widget.   NOTE: Some I cannot post.
