Project Review
TRANSFORMERS
PART I

Client: Paramount Pictures via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Spring 2006

While running the 3D Design and Animation Department at The Cimarron Group we did a small pitch to try and get some Transformers work for the studio. This was before any design work was let out on the film itself, so we had to make it up including the Logos and Optimus Prime based on the 80's cartoon vehicles that existed already.

We did an AV motion piece that has some moves on the Peterbuilt Truck which is what was used in the TV show, and with a resident expert Tom Kositchotitana in Motion Graphics he taught us all about the world of the the Autobots.

It was a fun experiment and I got to build a truck which as a Transportation Designer, any time you get to deal with wheels and a motor, this is good for me.

Look for added posts in the future!

Phantom 2040-PART XLI
Drawing Grids

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this 41st post on, Hearst Animations, "The Phantom 2040", I have posted some the packet pages I created that were translated into Korean and French for our studios outsourced vendors.

Basic Perspective is part of all training for drawing and design in the States, but the vendors we used had worked with little or no knowledge of how perspective works and the Layouts we were getting back were having basic issues, so I put together a few brief pages of points to use in perspective drawing. When I visited the studios in person I would do a small perspective classes for about 30 minutes and walk them through the basics needed for the shows and these were the leave behinds.

Also some of the overseas Artists had done perspective in the past on a limited basis, but nobody had done any perspective with curves, so we bought 100 sets of ship curves #19, and #48 and sent them over to the studios to have them use these tools to get a curved fish-eye look that was part of the main look we achieved in such a low budget show. FUN.

Project Review: Green Hornet Logos

A 3D Logo with Volumetric Particle Lighting from behind.

In this Idea I did a flatter extrusion with wire-tube "echoes" behind it going back in space.

An extruded glass sweep followed this version of the logo.

This Logo design I did used glass curved down for the extrusion.

I had to get a similar look to what finished but with a little room for playing so I did this Metal version.

A multi-layer Hornet Mark with glowing glass layers sandwiched in between.

An extreme angle on the Mark with 3 layers.

A 3D version of a 2D Logo supplied to us from the Car from the film.

An early symmetrical concept for a Mark.

Green Hornet
Logos and Hornet Icon

Client: Columbia Pictures via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Calvin Sumler.
Project Date Fall 2010.

I had a chance to work on a few Logos, and Icon Ideas for the Theatrical Advertising pitches for the new Green Hornet film out today so I have posted variations on both the Logo and the Iconic Hornet.

It was a short and fast one day job to do a few variations as the Logo for Comic Con was already done from another agency so I did some modified all glass and various curved extrusion Logos as alternates.

I also designed out a few Hornet Icons in various angles for them as well. A fun project.

Project Review:The Golden Compass 2002

Here is an exploded view of the the Alethiometer I built for The Golden Compass Advertising work.

A Front view matching the 2D Illustration in 3D.

A Darker metal was tested here in this view, more Copper.

An alternate view.

A close up on the Zodiac Characters.

The Golden Compass

Client: New Line Cinema via the Cimarron Group.
Art Director(s): Clive and Dawn Baillie
Project Date: Summer 2002

Back in 2002 I built out a 3D Alethiometer for the upcoming film The Golden Compass. At the time there was no principal photography yet so the design was still in 2D sketch form. They sent us a color sketch and I built out a 3D version of the Compass based on the single sketch. The compass was eventually animated by Matt Hartle for some test AV pieces as well.

A fun project and concept to build out, though it was never used for the trailers.

Personal Work: Automotive Design and Sketching

A toon styled sketch of my favorite car the Porsche Speedster!

A melted VW bug with some squared off stylization.

A new VW Microbus using some design traits from the New Bug.

A free form design using old style proportion and shapes with funky textures and a little Dali influenced flaps on the fenders etc. FUN!

A simple sports car sketch.

I doodle these little Deuce Coupe every week it seems...

Transportation Design and Sketching

As a graduate from Art Centers Transportation program in 1991, it is said we have gas in our veins since we eat drink and sleep cars. So on that note I present some design sketches and cartoony drawings I have done of various existing and fantasy cars. These are a sampling of the many sketches I have done over a number of years from the late 90's to the present.

Even though the bulk of my work is digital modeling and design illustration, I find time to keep limber and sketch cars and such as I can, and as my clients request them.

Project Review: School of Rock

The first pass at a heavy Metal Looking 3D Logo.

A refined version of the above Logo Presented with a soft round bevel.

A Chrome "Script" Logo concept done in steel as well with two layers.

The Final 3D pass I did with another two layer font with a mini serif.

A 3D Illustration of a Guitar Amp done for the DVD packaging.

The Teaser Poster with 3D rhinestones rendered out at 6000 pixels wide to enhance the practical Photo-shoot.

School of Rock

Client: via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s): Dustin Stanton, Eddie Segura.
Project Date: Spring 2003

I had the privilege of working on the Theatrical Posters for School of Rock as well as the DVD packaging. I did a few Logos but what finished was a 3D rhinestone render to line up with a special jacket graphic that Jack Black wore.

I also did some 3D Illustration for the DVD packaging and what finished was a AMP with a cord going to Jack playing on the back sleeve with instructions on the speaker grill. I had about 2 Hrs to build and render out the speaker so a super fast turn around on this one.

Project Review:The Phantom 2040-PART XL

A Remote Brain Case that was also motorized and scooted across the floor.

A Large Television Product Design sketch.

A Medical Device from the Series a Genetic Disassembler.

A fold out weapon design.

A Large bank of equipment[ a single bank shown above] grouped in 10's for the show.

Phantom 2040-PART XL
Product Design Props

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this 40th post on the Phantom 2040 TV Animation series I worked on in the early 90's , my first post for 2011 I have put up some added Product Designs I did for the series.

It was always a great part of the job to have to design an entire world of products, including everything around them from the city to the cars, to the clothes to the graphics and the products they use and interact with.

I also enjoyed designing for the theme of the show of tall and thin taking the design into a stretched proportion as well as adding just a hint of "toon" to keep us in the animation world so a bit of softness and character to the designs is always seen. FUN!

Project Review: Open Season-Motion Graphics

A Modified version of the Print Type on a darker Plank of Wood as a Holding Device.

The Print Logo copied for AV and stretched out wide as a test.

The Print Logo and 3D tree as seen in the Teaser posters used for AV.

The Final Logo tests done using the above Logo for AV.

The Final Logo Design look was provided to us and I duplicated it above for all AV work for all trailers and cards.

Some of the AV Cards from the Theatrical 3D Logos I Created for the various trailers.

OPEN SEASON

Client: Sony Pictures via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Winter 2004 of Theatrical and Winter 2005 for Home Entertainment

I worked on over 80 title finishes while running a 3D Design Department over at the Cimarron Group form 2003 to 2009, and Open Season came in for both the original Theatrical release, as well as the Home Video Trailers a year latter.

For this project I did a blue sky design with no reference first, then I copied the Logo from print on the tree, and finally I was provided with a look form the makers of the film to copy with the red extruded backs that eventually went to final finish.

All in all the 3D graphics I did were on about 15 trailers for Theatrical and Television on this smaller job. FUN!
