Project Review: WDI-Meadow Mayan-Icon

Main view of the Iconic Bird Temple.

The view of the reflecting pool at the top in the mouth of the Bird.

The Flying Dutchman-Meadow Mayan Icon Concept

Client: Walt Disney Imagineering.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Summer 1998.

One of the added concepts explored for the E-Ticket attraction concept for Adventureland in Paris was to create a large Icon that would stand out from a distance and something a story could be attached to easily. I went with a Bird tower with a reflecting pool at the very top surrounded by scaffolding as if archeologists were renovating the temple. It should be noted that the coaster riders would be under the tracks at the top of the lift and see the reflection in the water before they dive to the ground!

Very fun design to do, yet it was shelved by Michael Eisner during presentation.

Cheers, THOM

  1. Would this have been a redress/replacement of the existing Indy coaster in Adventureland, or would it be completely new?
