FAN POWER!
The Vehicles from the Animated Series Phantom 2040

This is the first in a series of posts on Phantom 2040. In 1992 I was hired on by David Corbett with the recommendation from the most talented Paul Lasaine [ http://paullasaine.blogspot.com/ ] to be an Art Director for the new Phantom Animated TV show. I worked at Hearst Animation for almost 3 years and had the privilege to do 56 Half Hour episodes of The Phantom, as well as help develop the New Flash Gordon show with my friend Nick Pugh.

For this "new" Phantom it now took place in the future in 2040 ALA Bladerunner, and this was the 23rd Phantom, Kit Walker. I worked with the writers Gar and Judy Reeves -Stevens in developing the technology used for flying in the future. I ended up using mostly fans vs jets or levitation, primarily because they look great animated.

For animation done in 2D, I needed to make the shapes all unique , and more of a simple shape so the overseas teams would have a better chance of getting the vehicles "On-Model". ALso details needed to be minimal for easy of animating as well. All and all, I am a "fan" of the FAN!

Cheers, THOM

There is a FACEBOOK group for the show here:

More Vehicle Cutaway Interiors

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this 42nd post on, Hearst Animations, "The Phantom 2040", I have posted some more of the design sketches that I did for some of the main vehicles used in the Animated TV Series.

Vehicle design in general is fun and in the series we use these vehicles on a regular basis so the animators in France, Canada, and South Korea needed reference for the interior scenes they would be laying out for the shows.

My favorite vehicle is posted here as well the flying fan powered "Pod". As an avid Old VW collector I have always loved the flower bud vase found in the VW bugs of old and even was brought back for the New Beetle as well, and that is where my inspiration came from, as these would land in little "egg cups" strategically placed in the city like bike racks. FUN, I wish they were real now!

Project Review: The Phantom 2040 PART XXXI-Vehicle Color Keys

Maximum Inc's Golden Boy Maxwell has a Limo.

One of my favorite designs is the single pod fan powered flying vehicle.
[ Influenced by an old VW Bud Vase!]

Kit Walker had a custom Hypercycle but this is the Police version of it here.

A Flying Fire Fighting Tanker.

The Assault Multicruiser was the base cruiser for all Hyper Vehicles I did.

Vehicle Color Keys

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this 31st post on the Phantom 2040 TV Animation series I worked on in the early 90's , here I have posted some more marker comp color keys. Traditionally we would "cel" paint a key and we did do a few that way, but since this was to be painted digitally we needed reference only for the Paint-Box[ Remember that!] systems.

As a Transportation major from Art Center Markers are our form of color keying so I used that to do all my keys while at Hearst Animation Productions.

Above is a small sample of various fan vehicles I designed that I came back and did these color keys over the inked sketches of mine.

Napkin Sketching and Doodles: PART VII-Submarines

A small sketch of a submarine I did in 2000 of a small two seater with a slick body design and one big fan prop out back.

This submarine sketch is a k hammered copper with rivets for the texture, but with aerodynamic fluid shapes to the body itself.

A small one man craft with dual props since this version also fly's in the air. Based on my research for fan-powered vehicles for the Phantom 2040

A small sketch done with a interlocking speed form body[ like a car]

My favorite sketch was this "fish" with the bubble up front based on my bubble car design from ACCD. I love the tail and side fins, all would be finished in copper, and brass.

Napkin Sketching Part VII
Submarines and Underwater Craft

In this seventh installment of the Napkin Sketches, and Doodles I do during times of relaxation I have posted a set of submarines I did back in 2000 when I was working in Spokane WA for Cyan, the nice folks who made the Myst and Riven Video games.

I was creating a mini submarine design for the game, so naturally I had watercraft on the brain, and while I was relaxing at a great steak house, or sushi bar in downtown Spokane, I sketched out these designs.

Layouts for the subway tube train from the opening film.

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

In this, my 71st post on "The Phantom 2040" Animation Series, I have posted up a vehicle that I did two versions for, as it was seen on a regular basis. Most Transportation designs in TV animation are a "One Shot", meaning they drive by once or twice in the background and that is it.

This vehicle however, was seen on a regular basis, as well as it transformed on screen so I did a few views in each configuration to help the international animation departments to be able to see better the two compared side by side. I also was able to go to South Korea and help them layout the animation sequences for the transformations, since the Key Framing was done in Vancouver and these sketches were well represented by them, it was the change that they needed a bit of help with.

Project Review: Phantom 2040 PART XVII

The Phantoms fold Up Wings, and his jumping Po-Go boots.

The Phantom Off Road Skates, and his Hover Boots[ fan powered].

The Phantom's Climbing Claws and his underwater diving rig.

The Muscle Enhancing Leg Springs for running speed.

Phantom 2040 PART XVII
The Phantoms Enhancement Bits

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Summer 1993.

In this Seventeenth part on my work on The Phantom 2o4o television series we focus today on the Phantom himself.
Kit Walker as the Phantom always we needed various gadgets to use, which as a Industrial Designer is such a fun part of the job. He needed various get-away apparatus for flying driving or swimming away. Also enhancements to jump or run faster via bionics.

Cheers, THOM
