Project Review KING KONG[2005] 3D Logo Designs PART III

A procedural texture was used here for this thin font with complete surface rusting yet remains smooth[ not deep pitting]

A Displaced 3D Rock logo I designed out for King Kong done in a very dark look, with almost just an edge light.

A more heavily rusted procedural texture was used on the logo that is all smoothed without sharp edges[ like X-men] with bolts on the surface and a bit of the ocean color reflecting up to play on the theme of the island he came from.

Metal type sitting on top of a rock pitted surface for this King Kong design with a wide one-line title with a curve and a tilted back camera view.

A different lunar texture [procedural] is used on this rock and stone version. I was a fan of the word "King" cut into the word "Kong", and we had a few ideas we worked out on in this way.

Deeper rust pits are now cut into a scratched up brushed metal softer cut logo designed here for King Kong.

A King Kong 3D Logo with a red organic consistent texture for this one liner.

3D Logo Designs PART III

Client: Universal Pictures via. BLT and Associates.
Art Director: Creative Directed by Warren Nung.
Project Date: Summer 2003.

Today is my third post covering the 3D Title Logos I did for the film project King Kong, back in 2003, and today I have posted some added 3D Title Logos I worked on.

When I was given a Title at BLT I was given a series of vector files, basic direction, and then I was off to create. It was always a back and fourth process when they suggested looks, and I would as well.

Many clients come with a very specific look they want, and offer no exploration, so I create exactly what they give me, but for others, they will give me room to explore, and BLT was usually the latter, so King Kong was a fun concept to create looks for sure, as I explored a bit.

One of my last 3D Logo projects I worked on at BLT and Associates, before moving on to The Cimarron Group was for the new Peter Jackson adaptation of King Kong.

I did well over 100 Logos, and here above are a few examples of what I did. I have more posted if you search.

Project Review KING KONG[2005] 3D Logo Designs PART II

For this version I had the KING float right over the brighter Metal KONG for this 3D Title Design I did for Peter Jackson's King Kong back in 2003.

A mesh deformation was used to get the 3D cracks in this version of the 3D-Logo for King Kong.

A HOT metal version here with rusted steel for the main Icon Logo.

A brighter metal look similar to the X-Men Logos I did for BLT while there.

A modified Lunar "Moon" Texture for this rock 3D Logo look with warm to cool light spills.

A King Kong 3D Logo Design I did with a thin lip as seen in older tin signage.

Project Date: Summer 2003.

Today I have posted some added 3D Title Logos I worked on as one of my last 3D Design Illustration projects I did for BLT Communications back in 2003 while I was the in-house 3D Designer.

Stone, Metal, Rusty, and an aged look were the ones that the team required, and I was supplied with a dozen splines laid-out by the various Art Directors, and Type designers they employ, so I did a few passes for each font as usual so about 100 Logos were delivered.

This project would have benefited from the new Dirt Shader I use on a regular basis to age the 3D Illustration better, but I did use the great Simbiont procedural textures I created in Dark Tree on almost every render.

Project Review: Godzilla vs. Kong Main Title Treatment Concepts February 2020

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- A brushed metal edge lit design with a signature red Vs' block up top. I added some procedural mini pitting across both textures to this a subtle texture.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- Dark and moody edge lit design. A heavy large Kong bevel and extrusion grounds the design below with the Red ink square vs. up in the corner. I used a black anodized aluminum face to keep the contrast high in this design for Godzilla Vs. Kong.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- brushed metal logo with a mild bevel up top and a bit heaver one on Kong below.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- Distressed metal face plate with polished sharp edge extrusion back on this design with a heavy X-men level of bevel. Warm lit from the bottom.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- flat plate brushed steel faces, with a rounded bevel deeper extrusion fully polished. Kong used a heaver deep extrusion on the bottom in this design. I used the red for the Vs. block paying tribute to the Chinese and Japanese signature ink block.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- Distressed iron logo with rounded beveled edges. a darker mood in the lighting for this comp.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- This is the Ambient Dirt render pass for the above design, showing the 3D displacement filling in the corroded areas with dirt. I multiply this render pass over the color one to accentuate the deep pits.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- a two level design with a red painted holding device behind the brushed steel face with a micro bevel.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- Lightly distressed aluminum with red anodized Kong below and a top cooler light source.

Godzilla vs. Kong 3D Main Title Key Art- My last comp and also my favorite one. Red lit from below and cool lit from above. Texture wise I have polished metal beveled edges, distressed metal inside the back extruded text centers.

Project Review
Main Title Treatment Concepts
February 2020

Client: Warner Brothers Pictures via BOND
Creative Direction:
Patrick Dillon.
Project Date:  February 2020.

Today I'm posting work I did for Patrick at the BOND Agency for Warner Brothers Pictures film Godzilla vs. Kong built in February 2020 that was released in theaters in 2021.

I was amped to work on this film, as I love both the Godzilla and and Kong franchises as a kid in the 70's watching all the original films, and I worked on the King Kong film back in 2003 and you can view the three posts I have on my blog.

Today I have posted ten of the Title Treatment concepts I did for this film. For this job, the type was locked in by the agency and the studio, so I was to do a number of designs as to how it can be interpreted into a dimensional title. Big heavy and steel was the direction. shiny and aged. as for color red was something they wanted to see. I used the red sparingly similar to a Chinese and Japanese red ink block or Hanko or Inkan.

I did a variety of extrusions both deep inward and heavy bevels.with a variety of steel textures. I did one with corrosion as a 3D Displacement as if the metal was rusted away over time. I have come to love doing big metal 3D Logos.

I am still doing freelance now as I hunt for a full-time place to work at, so if you need a bid for a 3D Illustration or 3D Logo, or a 3D Model feel free to contact me for a quote. I am open to Hourly gig's, Work Retainers, Part-time, and Full Time opportunities [ Open to relocation ] would be best.

I have worked remote since 2009, so I am ready to help you.

Project Review: Universal City Walk: Virtual Map Project 2004 PART I

An overhead shot of the full 3D Model I built of the City Walk Mall at Universal Studios Hollywood back in 2004.

A ground level shot of "Wasabi" a sushi restaurant that I blocked out.

A shot next door at Gladstones Seafood.

The King Kong Icon across from the two above restaurants is seen here with the Nascar building.

Here is a a shot at the main Cinema there.

Universal City Walk
Virtual Map Project 2004 PART I

Client: Universal Studios Hollywood via The Cimarron Group.
Direction: Mary Ellen Schrock
Project Date: Spring 2004

When I was an in-house 3D Design Director at The Cimarron Group from 2003-2009, I regularly provided 3D design and animation for the corporate divisions big client, Universal Studios, and today I've posted PART I on the work I did on the virtual map of the City Walk Mall.

The concept started as a simple 3D blocked model of the whole outdoor mall that we could use as stylized images for the various locations at this themed mall next to the Park. Soon we discussed a interactive element with a virtual map of the mall that could help folks explore the mall before they came out to visit it to get familiar with the layout and offers there.

I built it out in stages with a full architectural model of the entire mall, as well as parking structures, the grounds around the mall, as well as the park entrance itself. Today I have posted four of the over tow dozen locations I made.

The design is simple with the attention in the 3D Signage and logos to help with the fact that this was a virtual 3D map. I will be posting added shots from the various locations in the weeks to come.

A fun project that was eventually replaced with photography in the end, but a fun exercise and concept.

As a side note I worked on one of the Themed stores that used to be there "Out Takes", and you can view those here.
