3D Finish: 3D Illustration for Teaser KeyArt For Dreamworks: SING 2016.

I built the architectural facade in 3DSmax for the  Teaser Poster Key Art for Sing 2016.
Huge Hat-Tip to IMP awards.

3D Finish
3D Illustration for Teaser KeyArt For Dreamworks: SING 2016.

Client: Dreamworks. via Lassociates
Art Direction: Brian Christensen
Project Date: May 2015.

Last Spring, I worked with the highly talented team at L+A associates on the Theatrical Advertising work for Dreamworks next Aniamted film, to help create a 3D Illustration of a building and facade for a teaser poster that went to finish.[ Finish= Art is picked to go to final by client]

I was glad to see it on IMPawards, as the title for the film changed from the pre-production one, so the title I did was removed[ on a layer], and revised by LA, yet they used my architectural work with the new name SING incorporated into it for this finish.

Again, I am not authorized to show any of my 3D facade or 3D neon and bulb logo work details, so an online poster is all that is available to view.

Project Review: Jurassic World Lego set-3D Model build out for Corporate Animation. July 2015.

I did a test of a single Lego block to deliver to the new client to show how I was approaching the Quad Sub-D build.

Here is the block build out stage with 90% of the various pieces for this virtual Lego buildout.

An overhead 3/4 shows the built out Lego set with placeholder materials. At export the blocks will come over with a placeholder Material ID so the export can be blocked in fast on the client side.

Here is the Subdivided render with one level of subdivision added for the long shots.

The Ambient Occlusion Sub-D quad render of the file shows the build.

A Side view render testing the surface for any flaws.

The Poly render. If you look closely I built the walls with some gaps a a real build would have, not CG perfect.

Project Review: Jurassic World Lego set
3D Model build out for Corporate Animation.
July 2015.

Client: Lego via Creative Xs.
Art Direction: Don Phillips.
Project Date: July 10th, 2015.

Back this Summer, I was contacted to build out a Lego set for an upcoming themed set that ties in with the release of Jurassic World  from a new client creativeXs.

This 3D Modeling gig was for an in-house promotion video, so I had a limited budget to work with so the complete set was not built. I built out the main Dino-Pen system w/o any figures, or vehicles.

We also discussed the small "lego' logo found on each pin for every lego and decided not to build them in due to cost, as well as production time as this would substantially increase the render time for this and that detail was net seen in the storyboards so we deleted it off the geometry build. It can be added via a bump or displacement map if needed as well.

I first did a test block as this was a new client to assure them what I would deliver. I then built out all the various parts. I did not have the set but had images form the client as well as found online to match. Once the individual blocks were made and I had a naming convention in place I proceeded to hand build the Lego set out.

I delivered the file as a OBJ, and a FBX export as they finish it out in C4D on a mac. I have regular clients I do the building for and export out, this is about 20% of my business.

A fun gig, to build out, then to play with these virtual Legos, so much fun.

3D Awards: 2015 KeyArt Awards-Silver In the Heart of the Sea.

The Key Art Winner - Silver for In the Heart of the Sea.
I built the Ship in 3DSmax for the project.

3D Awards
2015 KeyArt Awards-Silver In the Heart of the Sea.

Client: Warner Bros. via Works ADV.
Art Direction: Calvin Sumler.
Project Date: January 2015.

Had a major flood in the studio so posting was off for a while. Nice to be back posting.

Last year I worked with the highly talented Calvin Sumler at Works Advertising, to help create a 3D illustration of a ship for the poster teaser for In the Heart of the Sea.

I was glad to see that it won a Silver Key Art Award this year, as well as made the Rottentomatoes TOP 25 Poster list for 2015.

Sadly, I am not authorized to show any of my 3D ship work details, so an online poster is all that is available to view.

3D Stock Model Sales:- Main Street USA-Dime Store 2010

An ambient render of the stock 3D Model I built for sale online @ TurboSquid.

A basic rendered version of the asset set up and ready to map and go in your 3D program.

A 3/4 Right side[ around the corner] wireframe view of the five and Dime.

The 3D Rendered version of the side of the store.

This is a 360 3D Model build, exterior only, so it has a loading dock with Electrical panels out back in the Alley.

The rendered back side of this turn of the century building.

The Left side was designed to sit flush against the next building on the street so it only has minimal window up top.

The textured 3D Architectural render[ a fast stylized look]

The 3D Wire frame shot of the entryway to the store.

The textured render of this virtual dime store.
A worms Eye view of the dime store has an AC unit, a Water Tower, as well as a locked fire exit.

The last color render showing off this stock model I sell online.

The exploded view with like-parts grouped for easy adjustments.

3D Stock Model Sales
Main Street USA Dime Store 2010

Client: 3D Conceptual Designer
Art Director(s): Myself.
Project Date: . January 2010.

I established a 3D Stock Model sales model while in-house at The Cimarron Group from 2003 to 2009, and after leaving, I started to sell myself, and today I am reviewing a hard surface Architectural Model I sell online of a Vintage Five and Dime store.

This asset is still available for sale at TurboSquid, the largest online stock 3D house and you can see it here.

I regularly build stock 3D models for online sales via TurboSquid,  I create for sale, and this is one structure in a series of Old Towne architecture found in most older city's in the US.

I styled this after one in Upper Michigan I went to as a child. This is an exterior only asset for background renders and virtual city work.

You an view all online sale via the TAG, or go to my Cimarron Models here, and my own Sub-D 3DCD work here. for 3DCD.

Project Review:3D Cards for Troy on DVD-TV Spot-Home Entertainment 2004-PART I

A Birds-Eye overview shot of this animated 3D End Card I did for the TV spots for the release of Troy on DVD back in 2004.

This early frame had higher 3D motion blur added as shown in this RAW 3D rendered image.

This ambient wireframe render shows the Sphere background reflection object that is hidden to camera.

The DVD case gimbals into frame while the type is a straight slam as seen in this frame coming into safe frame.

 The type slamming into frame.

As the 3D objects slow down the blur reduces.

The Type and Case[ with linked DVD's inside] shown in a wireframe overlay render.

By just one second into the spot, the 3D type and DVD case are both in action safe and the last of the 3D Motion-Blur is fading.

 The seating in wireframe.

Camera lowers and moves a bit to the right once the objects seat as the DVD discs inside come out in a one-two beat.

 DVD disc one peeking out.

Both of the DVD's are now animated out of the virtual DVD case.

 An final ambient rendered frame.

Project Review
3D Cards for Troy on DVD-TV Spot
Home Entertainment 2004-PART I

Client: Warner Brothers via The Cimarron Group.
Art Direction: Myself.
Project Date: May 2004.

I do thousands of 3D logos, mostly designed for Theatrical Film posters, but I do get to work on Motion Graphics frames as well, and back in 04', while still in-house @ The Cimarron Group running the 3D Design Dept, I was asked to create the 3D title cards for the Troy to DVD work going on in Home Entertainment division.

I was familiar with the property, as I had hand built the type for the trailers while still over at BLT Communications the year prior, so I was asked to create these 3D Type Cars as well as the animated DVD case wit the discs to animate out.

At the time I had not perfected my Single Point Bevel technique which I would now use for a property like this, especially since they used Trajan Pro for the title and I have built this out twice, so I did a flat-topped basic bevel for the type.

I used Cebas' Final Render Plug In renderer with the 3D Motion Blur which worked great. A quick set up and once I made the case, I've re-purposed it a dozen plus times with new artwork for the various Home Entertainment work I did during my stay there.

I did work for print as well that I will showcase in another post in the future.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review: 1937 Sterling-J: Reconstruction via 3D Printing 2014-15-PART I

The last version I built included a newly built cab, as the original 3D scan was very rough reflecting the part is currently un-restored. I did a paint test to check the surfaces.

The main progress work is all rendered in an ambient shader to show just surfaces. A 3/4 front low angle.

A birds eye render over the hood of the 1937 Sterling-J.

A front view elevated as well showing the grill as it flows into the sides.

A 3/4 back shot of the cab[ original rough with my new built 3D]

A lower height front view of the grill.

A close up on the hood side and emblem details.

The body hood would be cast in steel as the original via a lost-wax 3D-Print.

The nose.

My favoirite area is whre the 'jewelry' is, the little chrome details.

The final build with the new cab.
Here is a color test with the OG scanned Cab[ rougher shape]

Project Review
1937 Sterling-J
Reconstruction via 3D Printing
2014-15-PART I

Client Roger Dean.
Creative Direction: Roger Dean and build team.
Project Date(s) Feb 2014 thru the present[ ongoing]

I have been doing more and more 3D Printing design work, as I was trained in Industrial Design Automotive at Art Center, so naturally a project like this is a dream one, that comes around only a few times in ones career.

As an avid VW and vintage Porsche fan, I was contacted by Roger Dean about a Speedster model I had made[here], and we proceeded to discuss the new technology and use of 3D Printing in the building of classic as well as custom automotive design.

Roger helped get the newly made Hebmüller molds in Germany back, and has had many a Vintage VW grace the pages of Hot VW's over the years, and apart from secret work in that arena, he had this Sterling J project on deck to begin with.

His client owns dozens of Sterling's, an early American Semi Truck Marque, however the beautiful bodywork and Airflow grills are all destroyed and only exist in pictures.

He has just the cab, so we started by having Scan-Site do a full point cloud scan of the existing cab to match the virtual build to match, and I built around that.

I proceeded to create all the parts needed for this 1937 Sterling Model J to be printed in 3D to build the buck out as well as to cast the aluminum parts as needed.

I've delivered the STL[ stereolithography] 3D Print files and they will be beginning with a 1/5th scale model begin with prior to the full size buck.

I will have more posts covering the progress of this first Sterling truck, so check back.

Cheers, THOM
