Phantom 2o4o: Ghostwood PART IX

First Design sketch used for the Ghostwood.

A Prop Color Key from the show with the Ghostwood inside the Test tube.

PHANTOM 2o4o: PART IX
Ghostwood

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Fall 1993.

When I approached the thematic design of the show Phantom 2o4o, I based the initial proportions on the main characters that were developed by Peter Chung, so they lived in a "Tall and Thin" world to match. On top of the basic proportions picked, I visually addressed a lot of the shape language used from the Art Nouveau era as seen in the wrapping freeways and the overall design of the ironwork and carvings.

So as to the mysterious "Ghostwood" that grows all over the city, it is a visual representation of the jungle trying to break back into the city, and it was really not designed as much as it was just sketched from life. What I did was apply the "Thin" motif found in all other design I executed, and used that as a basis for the design of the vines of Ghostwood. I also used the artwork of Mucha with the wrapping movement he sketched during the Art Nouveau era, and designed the vines to match a smoke like movement.

Irian Jaya Tree People

Client: WDI
Art Director: Tom Morris
Project Date: Summer 1997-98

During the 90's I bounced around from company to company doing Theme Park Design. It was a busy time then as it was called "The Theme Park Wars" as every studio was expanding and Universal and Disney were one-upping each other all over the globe, so it was good time to be a show designer.

These sketches represent a concept for a themed E-Ticket high dollar attraction that would go into the Adventureland area in the Paris park next to Indiana Jone. We went with a tree people motif and I designed various temples of rock and wood and icons to represent this huge attraction which basically covered a roller coaster. The project was scrapped as Mr Eisner did not want "An Iron Ride in His Park".

I ROBOT
3D Illustration for Key Art overview

Client: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. Via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director(s): Chad Robertson and Calvin Sumler.
Project Date: Late Fall 2003.

My first job for The Cimarron Group was to do some 3D logos for the upcoming i-Robot feature with Will Smith. I had worked with Chad Robertson over at BLT so this was a continuation of our working relationship, just now moved over to another company, so we explored transparent logos with gears and misc. machinery inside the type.

I also got to work with Calvin Sumler for the first time on I Robot, and now having worked with him for almost seven years I have befitted from his amazing design sense and it has helped my 3D advance to another level.

None of the logos finished, but it was a good exercise that helped work out some challenges with transparent logos that were used a few more times over the following years.

Look for more posts on this project in the future.

Project Review
Countrywide Store Remodel Visualization
Part I

Client: Countrywide Homes via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Summer 2007

I had worked with Countrywide in the past visualizing various Stores and Banks for the major remodel that was taking place from 2004 to 2007. This set of images was one of the last projects I did for Countrywide in 2007.

I would like to note that Countrywide was using the traditional marker sketches to sell the design internally, yet the limitation was that the people making the decision were not able to translate the sketch into a pure vision of what the space would look like. Here is where we convinced them to do a 3D visualization to get closer to photo-real. They were impressed, and by doing these studies they estimated a cost savings of 12% since we identified a few issues that were addressed in these images that a traditional sketch would not show.

Phantom 2o4o: PART VIII
Graft

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date: Fall 1993.

Head of Security and chief Muscle for Maximum Inc. is Graft, voiced by Ron Pearlman. Grafts face was designed by Peter Chung along with the main 8 characters for the show before I arrived as Art Director and Conceptual Designer, so after designing the generic BIOT's , I moved on the design Graft as a unique BIOT with a human torso "grafted" in. Graft also plugged into multiple configurations be pulling out the torso section and plugging him into another body as seen above.

Triple-X 3D Logos

Client: Revolution Studios via BLT and Associates.
Art Director(s):Jeff Barnett and Hunger Lam
Project Date: Fall 2001.

One of my earlier 3D logo projects while at BLT and Associates was to come up with the main title logo for the new "Triple-X" film starring Vin Diesel. Fairly straight forward to design the logo with three "X's". A good exercise with about 50 logos designed, these are a random sampling of directions we went.

Alfa Romeo Sketch

Alfa Romeo

Just a quick short post today. During my final term at Art Center, I worked on the Alfa Romeo project, back in 1991, and one of the stages was to evaluate the icons in their history and I acquainted myself via sketching a few cars. This was my favorite one.

3D Firearms PART I

Since my first days in 3D illustration I have been building firearms. My first was a Walther PPK for James Bond in the World is not Enough where the theme was Ice, so I built a fully transparent gun with all internal workings.

Since then I have built from scratch about 6-8 firearms with about half being full models with all internals as well. A few are for sale online from my old employer The Cimarron Group.
